GEORGE TURNAH AT 43: FROM THE SHORES OF KOLO TO THE FRONTLINES OF LEADERSHIP
The Extraordinary Journey of a Young Man, the Burden of Leadership and the Promise of a Greater Legacy

September 3, is more than a date on the calendar. It is a moment to pause, reflect and celebrate the life and journey of a man whose story, in many ways, mirrors the possibilities that exist when determination meets opportunity, when courage meets purpose, and when leadership is understood not merely as a position, but as a responsibility. High Chief (Hon.) Alabh George Turnah, MON, Esq., Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa State, is 43. At 43, his is already a story spanning student leadership, activism, law, public service, entrepreneurship, politics and community engagement; a journey that began with the humble circumstances of a young boy from Kolo in Ogbia Local Government Area.
George Turnah's story is particularly instructive because it did not begin from privilege. It began with fishing, family values, faith, discipline and an unrelenting determination to become something greater. Under the influence of his parents and maternal grandfather, he learned early the values of hard work, responsibility and service. Those values followed him into his student years, where his leadership qualities became evident long before he entered mainstream politics. From his days as a student leader at the Bayelsa State College of Arts and Science to his emergence as Secretary-General of NANS Rivers/Bayelsa JCC, Secretary-General of NANS Zone B, and eventually Vice-President, National Affairs of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Turnah established himself as a voice of courage, organisation and advocacy. His student activism was not simply about holding titles; it was about confronting issues affecting education, students and the wider society.
His journey into the legal profession added another dimension to that foundation. He studied Law at the Niger Delta University, proceeded to the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2010. His service at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) also stands as a significant chapter in his public journey. Turnah was first appointed as Special Assistant on Youth Matters to the Managing Director/CEO of the NDDC and, following his performance, was reappointed in 2013. In that capacity, he worked extensively with young people across the Niger Delta, championing youth engagement, empowerment and peace-building at a particularly challenging period in the region’s history. His experience at the NDDC further reinforced his conviction that sustainable development must place people, especially young people, at the centre of leadership and public policy. Along the way came recognition, including his national honour as a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) in 2011.
But perhaps what makes his journey more remarkable is that the honours did not become the destination. He continued to build; professionally, entrepreneurially, socially and politically. From legal practice and business to employment creation and youth-oriented initiatives, Turnah has consistently demonstrated an interest in creating platforms through which people, particularly young Nigerians, can find opportunities to improve their lives.
Today, however, the most significant chapter of his journey is perhaps his responsibility as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa State. Taking up the mantle at such a critical juncture, when the PDP, and indeed Nigeria’s broader political landscape, was undergoing a defining transformation, Turnah emerged as part of a new generation of leaders with the courage, conviction and capacity to challenge old narratives and shape a new political direction. In that defining season, he became a formidable and increasingly influential voice, resonating far beyond Bayelsa and contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s evolving political discourse.
Leadership of a major political organisation is never an easy assignment. It demands the ability to manage divergent interests, reconcile competing ambitions, build structures, inspire confidence and, above all, maintain focus in the midst of political turbulence. Turnah's emergence as PDP State Chairman in 2026 has therefore placed him at the centre of a new political conversation in Bayelsa. His leadership has been associated with efforts to strengthen the party's structures, widen participation, improve the welfare of party officials and members, and reposition the PDP for renewed political relevance. His recent public interventions have also shown an increasing emphasis on issues that directly affect ordinary Bayelsans: employment, poverty, healthcare, education, transportation and the responsible use of public resources.
But beyond the politics, beyond the titles and beyond the public engagements, there is another side of George Turnah that deserves recognition. He is a man shaped by relationships, mentorship, loyalty and faith. His political journey has been influenced by people he regards as mentors and leaders, most notably former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, whose influence has been a recurring part of Turnah's public story. Turnah remains one of the fervent students of the Wike School of Political Leadership, with the former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the FCT, Chief Dr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, serving as a significant influence in his evolving approach to political leadership, strategic thinking and organisational excellence. Yet the true measure of any mentee is not simply the greatness of the mentor, but what the mentee eventually makes of the opportunities and values received. Turnah's journey suggests a man still seeking to contribute more to society.
At 43, therefore, George Turnah should not be judged merely by what he has already achieved, but also by what he chooses to do with the enormous responsibility that now rests on his shoulders. Forty-three is an age of maturity, but also an age of greater responsibility. It is an age when experience must begin to produce enduring institutions; when ambition must increasingly give way to legacy; when personal success must become a tool for collective advancement. These exemplify the true character of George Turnah.
For Bayelsa, this is particularly important. Ours is a State blessed with human talent and natural resources, yet confronted by the familiar challenges of unemployment, poverty, infrastructure deficits, educational needs and limited opportunities for young people. And Turnah’s belief remains consistent that political leadership must move beyond rhetoric. It must become about people, about creating hope where there is despair, opportunity where there is exclusion, and a sense of belonging where people feel forgotten. This is the standard by which every emerging political leader of this generation should ultimately be measured.
And perhaps this is the most important message on George Turnah's 43rd birthday: the journey is not over. The young fisherman from Kolo who became a student leader, the student activist who became a lawyer, the lawyer who became a national award recipient, the entrepreneur who created opportunities for others, and the political actor who now leads one of Bayelsa's most important political institutions has entered another chapter of responsibility.
At 43, the question is no longer simply, How far can George Turnah go? The more important question is now in the thousands of Bayelsans and Nigerians his journey has continued to inspire, empower and lift along the way.
Because ultimately, leadership is not measured by the height to which one rises, but by the number of people who can rise because one was there. Without mincing words, High Chief (Hon.) Alabh George Turnah, MON, Esq., is a gift to Bayelsans; a product of humble beginnings, disciplined leadership, intellectual capacity and an enduring commitment to service. At a time when Bayelsa needs courageous, strategic and people-oriented leadership, Turnah represents a generation of leaders with the experience, energy and vision to contribute meaningfully to the State’s progress.
So today, we celebrate High Chief (Hon.) Alabh George Turnah, MON, Esq. We celebrate the journey, the struggles, the victories, the lessons and the promise of greater service ahead. We celebrate a Bayelsan whose story reminds our young people that humble beginnings do not have to dictate the limits of one's destiny.
As he marks his 43rd birthday, may God grant him greater wisdom, sound health, courage, discernment and the grace to deploy every opportunity entrusted to him for the advancement of humanity, Bayelsa State and Nigeria.
