MINISTRY OF WOMEN AFFAIRS, NASOW FLAG OFF THREE-DAY MEDICAL OUTREACH FOR PREGNANT WOMEN AND NURSING MOTHERS

The Bayelsa State Ministry of Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development, in collaboration with the Nigerian Association of Social Workers (NASOW), Bayelsa State Chapter, has commenced a three-day community medical outreach programme for pregnant women and nursing mothers.

The outreach, which began on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at the Nigerian Police Clinic in Yenagoa, is aimed at promoting maternal and child health, strengthening family welfare, and expanding access to social support services. Beneficiaries received essential items and participated in health education sessions on safe motherhood, responsible parenting, and available support services.

Addressing the participants, the Chairperson of NASOW, Bayelsa State Chapter, Mrs Lilian Nkiruka Obah, urged pregnant women and nursing mothers to rely on qualified medical professionals throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding, stressing that professional medical guidance is vital to the health of both mother and child.

Also speaking, the Director of Women Affairs, Mrs Yemi Atotu, encouraged mothers to be intentional in raising their children, describing the family as the foundation of every society and noting that the effects of poor parenting begin within the home before impacting the wider community.

Medical Social Worker Mrs Nerissa Ogori reaffirmed the role of social workers in advocating for vulnerable individuals and ensuring access to essential support services. She encouraged participants to seek professional assistance whenever they face challenges beyond their capacity and shared contact details for follow-up support.

Speaking on maternal health, Mrs Timinirerela Garden Koko educated the women on the importance of good personal hygiene during pregnancy and breastfeeding as a key factor in protecting the health of both mother and child.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, one of the pregnant women expressed appreciation to the Ministry and NASOW for the timely intervention, describing the outreach as impactful and encouraging.

The Matron of the Nigerian Police Clinic, Mrs Ayibaemi, commended the organisers for bringing the programme to the facility, while ACP (Dr.) Oni Akindele praised the initiative and encouraged beneficiaries to put the lessons learned into practice.

The outreach programme reflects NASOW's commitment to humanitarian service and complements the Ministry's efforts to improve maternal and child welfare across Bayelsa State. The programme will continue on Thursday, 30 July 2026, at the Women Affairs Clinic and Azikoro Health Centre.

The Nigerian Girls Guide Association (NGGA), Bayelsa State Chapter, has paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development, Hon. Joanah Gigi, as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration towards the advancement and protection of the girl child in Bayelsa State.

The delegation was led by the Deputy Chief, Zone A (Eastern), Dame Selea Kombo, alongside the State Commissioner of the Girls Guide Association, Miss Queen Feinakedoh, who spoke on behalf of the association during the visit. Also present at the meeting was the Director of Women Affairs, Mrs Yemi.

Miss Feinakedoh stated that the visit was aimed at familiarising the association with the Honourable Commissioner and the Ministry while highlighting some of the association's ongoing programmes focused on empowering the girl child. She explained that the association has continued to organise awareness campaigns in schools, promote personal hygiene education, and combat menstrual poverty by distributing sanitary pads and other hygiene products to schoolgirls who are unable to afford them.

Responding, Hon. Joanah Gigi commended the Nigerian Girls Guide Association for its unwavering commitment to the development, welfare and empowerment of the girl child through impactful community-based initiatives. She assured the delegation of the Bayelsa State Government's support for programmes that promote the wellbeing and future of young girls.

The Commissioner also encouraged the association to extend its outreach to children's homes across the state by providing mentorship, life skills and education on personal hygiene, noting that such interventions would further contribute to raising confident, healthy and responsible young girls.

The visit reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Ministry and the Nigerian Girls Guide Association to advancing the rights, welfare and holistic development of girls in Bayelsa State.

Leading the delegation, the President of the association, Mrs. Ebilambo M. Sikpi, described the visit as a familiarisation meeting with the Commissioner, who is also a member of the group. The Honourable Commissioner for Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development, Madam Joanah Gigi, has reaffirmed the Bayelsa State Government's unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive society where every woman, irrespective of ethnic origin, is empowered to contribute meaningfully to governance, leadership and sustainable development.

The Commissioner made this known while receiving the leadership of the Association of Non-Indigene Women in Bayelsa State during a courtesy visit to her office.
