🌍 COLONIAL BORDERS, MODERN PROBLEMS: IS AFRICA STILL LIVING A DIVIDED REALITY?
Look at the map of Africa.
Now ask yourself:
Who drew these borders?
Not Africans.
These lines were carved during the Berlin Conference—
with rulers, ink, and zero regard for: ❌ Ethnic groups
❌ Languages
❌ Cultures
❌ Historical alliances
Communities that once lived as one were split across countries.
Others with completely different identities were forced into one state.
Fast forward to today:
⚠️ Ethnic tensions
⚠️ Cross-border conflicts
⚠️ Political instability
⚠️ Identity struggles
Many of these challenges trace back—not entirely, but significantly—to those artificial divisions.
But here’s the deeper question:
Why are we still defending borders that were never designed for us?
Africa trades more with Europe, Asia, and America than it does within itself.
A trader in West Africa may find it easier to export to Europe than to a neighboring African country.
That’s not geography.
That’s structure.
Yet, change is slowly emerging:
🤝 Regional integration efforts
📈 The African Continental Free Trade Area
🛂 Visa-free and open-border policies across some African states
These are early steps toward correcting a historical design flaw.
The real challenge is not just removing borders on a map.
It is removing the mental borders we’ve inherited.
💬 Let’s talk:
Should Africa rethink its borders and move toward deeper political and economic unity,
or should countries focus on strengthening themselves individually first?
