A week ago today marked the end of my third trip to Alaska this summer — how lucky am I?! Azamara took us to new-to-me ports of call like Haines, Klawock and Nanaimo, and enabled fun-filled adventures like riding the world’s longest ZipRider and snorkeling in Alaskan waters, not to mention a memorable cultural experience. What made the voyage even more memorable was sharing it all with a longtime friend on her first (but certainly not last!) visit to the state I hold dear.

The absolute perfect day in Icy Strait Point: watching whales feeding just off our ship, sampling local bites, a cultural experience and meeting a standard Schnauzer, capped off with riding the longest ZipRider in the world. Couldn’t have asked for more!

How lucky are we to have had an absolute stunner of a day for our visit to Hubbard Glacier onboard Azamara Pursuit. Our captain expertly navigated the ship to within a half-mile of the glacier, giving awe-inspiring views to all of the guests onboard. We spotted sea lions hauled out on a rocky outcropping just before the glacier, saw and heard calving, and simply soaked in the views. Very lucky indeed.

When the World Cup was last in the U.S. in 1994, I was a 22-year-old recent college graduate living in Orlando, bright-eyed and ready for anything. I quickly signed up to volunteer for the largest sporting event in the world, and found myself on the pitch during matches as a runner, whisking rolls of film (yes, film!) from the on-field photographers to a media trailer to be developed, and beamed to their respective outlets around the world. It was exhilarating.

Needless to say, I’m excited for the World Cup to begin today, and even more so to have written a series of guides to the host cities for Southern Living Magazine.
