If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing whales in the wild, not just as a tourist, but while actually learning about their behavior, conservation, and research, this is for you. 🐋🌊

You don’t need to be a scientist to participate.

gives ocean lovers the opportunity to join real marine conservation experiences in one of South Africa’s most important whale and dolphin regions.

From whale watching and marine wildlife observation to conservation activities and ocean education, this experience is designed for curious people who want to connect deeper with the ocean and contribute to something meaningful.

Whether you’re passionate about marine life, conservation, photography, or simply want to experience whales in a completely different way, this could be the perfect adventure for you.

Mangrove ecosystems generate critical ecological and climate data, but collecting, organizing, and standardizing that information across monitoring programs remains is still one of the main challenges. 🌿📊

MariMap enables researchers and conservation teams to conduct structured mangrove assessments through standardized digital surveys and long-term ecosystem monitoring.

The platform supports the collection of key ecological indicators including:
• Habitat composition and substrate condition
• Fish community assessments
• Invertebrate biodiversity monitoring
• Spatial and temporal ecosystem change tracking

By centralizing field data into one platform, MariMap helps improve data consistency, accessibility, and analysis for science-based conservation and restoration efforts.

Built for researchers, NGOs, marine protected areas, and monitoring initiatives working to better understand coastal ecosystems through scalable ocean data infrastructure.

Not all sharks are the same 🦈
Some are shy, some are curious, some stay deep, and others cruise through coral reefs.
Learning to tell them apart changes the way you see the ocean.

Because when you understand their behavior, you stop fearing them… and start loving them. 🌊

Can you guess which shark this is? 👀

Mangroves are more than forests, they are coastal guardians 🌿🌊

Healthy mangrove ecosystems protect shorelines, store blue carbon, support biodiversity, and serve as nurseries for countless marine species. But protecting them starts with understanding them through reliable, standardized data.

MariMap for Mangroves is designed to support long-term ecosystem monitoring by streamlining field surveys, biodiversity assessments, and restoration tracking in one unified platform.

The system supports:
— Tree growth monitoring (DBH, height, forest structure & biomass)
— Fauna observations across mangrove ecosystems
— Standardized monitoring workflows for long-term ecosystem assessment
— Spatial and temporal analysis to better understand ecosystem change over time

By collecting consistent field data, teams can make more informed conservation and restoration decisions while building stronger datasets for the future of coastal ecosystems.

Just because the headlines are negative doesn’t mean everything related to coral is! ❌

While nothing other than wide scale, international cooperation can solve the climate crisis’s effect on coral mortality, there are still plenty of sources of hope out there 🥹

Corals are spawning all around the Coral Triangle, high cover reefs still exist in multiple countries, and innovations are consistently being made around the world.

And thanks to an invite from , we get to share one of them with you today!

Back in September we got to see their new platform MariMap in action at ’s Mangrove restoration sites.🌱🌱

We got to see how the new software enhances all levels of data utilization, from enabling efficient selection of survey sites using satellite insights to streamlining analysis through automation.

And it’s not just about mangroves! MariMap is also designed for coral conservation, and stands to be one of many new innovations fighting against the coral mortality that feels so inevitable in 2026…🪸

Effective reef conservation depends on reliable, standardized data 📊🪸

MariMap is a unified platform for collecting, managing, and analyzing coral reef data across monitoring and restoration workflows.

The system supports:
— Benthic surveys for substrate and coral cover assessment
— Belt transects for fish community analysis (abundance, diversity, biomass)
— Invertebrate monitoring for key indicator species

It also integrates restoration metrics aligned with Coral Restoration Consortium (CRC) standards, including:
outplanting records, nursery growth tracking, survival rates, and site performance.

MariMap enables longitudinal data collection, facilitating spatial and temporal analysis of reef condition and restoration outcomes.

Say hello to MariMap! 🌊

The ocean holds an immense amount of data. Yet today, much of this information is fragmented across platforms, datasets, and monitoring initiatives, making it difficult for scientists and Marine Protected Area managers to turn it into meaningful conservation action.

MariMap is our response to this challenge.
Our platform seeks to bring together global ocean datasets and monitoring tools into one place, allowing scientists, conservationists, and Marine Protected Area managers, Governments, and local communities to explore and monitor key ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass, and helping transform fragmented information into actionable insights for ocean conservation.

MariMap integrates global data sources and initiatives including , , Copernicus Land Monitoring Service, , Global Mangrove Watch, , OBIS (Ocean Biodiversity Information System), , UNEP-WCMC, WDPA, and ProtectedSeas, among others.

By connecting these resources in a single platform, MariMap helps support better monitoring, stronger science, and smarter ocean management.

🌍 This is just the beginning! MariMap is evolving quickly. We are inviting pilot partners, researchers, and implementers to co-design features and standards alignment.
