🔑Judicial cooperation is key to stop international drug trafficking networks!

During actions last week in Romania, a criminal group offering drug transport services to other criminals was halted.

Important evidence from four countries, led to the arrest of seven suspects and the seizure of EUR 25 million worth of drugs. The European Investigation Orders required to gather the evidence were coordinated by Eurojust.

✉️ Messages from SkyECC were obtained and will now be used in further legal proceedings.

📲 Over half of all criminal investigations today include a request for cross-border access to electronic evidence such as texts, e-mails or messages in apps.

The SIRIUS Electronic Evidence Situation Report presents the challenges law enforcement, judicial authorities and service providers face when accessing electronic evidence.

🔎 The report looks at growing data requests, complex legal and technical challenges, and the new EU e-Evidence package.

🌍 Eurojust: home to global justice – cooperation outside the EU’s borders 2025
As crime becomes increasingly global, judicial authorities need to find easier ways to work across borders.

📊 Since 2020, about 20% of newly registered Eurojust cases involve a third country each year.

⚖️ In 2025, Switzerland had the most involvement in Eurojust cases among third countries, with 275 cases, followed by the United Kingdom, Albania and Ukraine.

🤝 By the end of 2025, Eurojust had Contact Points in 82 countries worldwide, as well as three regional organisations.

🌍 Corruption cases move across borders – cooperation must keep pace.
Eurojust President Michael Schmid delivered a keynote speech at the Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities in Vienna.

⚖️ Corruption cases often involve actors, assets and evidence in several countries. Effective investigations depend on efficient cross-border cooperation.

⚖️ Key developments in judicial cooperation 2025

Joint investigation teams (JITs) are an advanced tool for judicial cooperation supported by Eurojust.

📊 In 2025, Eurojust supported 412 JITs – 11% more than in 2024.

🖊️ Of these, 136 JITs were newly signed in 2025. The largest numbers were established to tackle drug trafficking and money laundering.

🤝 Eurojust plays a crucial role in its application, supporting the use of many hundreds of European Arrest Warrants by national authorities each year.

⚖️ Someone wanted by justice is found in another EU country.
What happens next?

For over 20 years, the European Arrest Warrant has helped judicial authorities across the EU work together to arrest and surrender people wanted for prosecution or to serve a sentence imposed in another Member State.

While reporting varies from year to year, the 2024 data provided by Member States show broadly stable activity, with some signs of more effective cooperation:

📈 66.27% of arrests led to a surrender, up from 57.80% in 2023.

🤝 Of the surrender procedures started in 2024, 71.12% were successfully completed, compared with 59.57% in 2023.

The figures also show that meeting deadlines remains a challenge in some Member States. The European Commission will keep working with them to address this. ⏱️
