What does it take to reach the world stage? 🏑

At the 2026 Hockey World Cup in Amstelveen, we asked Jacob Draper and Fred Newbold from the Welsh team and Anna Toman from England to share their advice for young hockey players hoping to compete at this level one day.

Their message was to the point. Train hard, keep developing on and off the pitch, make time for life beyond hockey, and remember to enjoy the game along the way.

The 2026 Hockey World Cup is well under way at Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen! 🏑

As the tournament gets started, we spoke with players Lily Owsley and Anna Toman from the England team and Fred Newbold from Wales about their connection to the Netherlands, from playing for Dutch hockey clubs to experiencing Dutch culture first-hand.

Now competing at the highest level for their national teams, they shared what stands out to them about life, hockey and culture in the Netherlands.

The Hockey World Cup starts today! 🏑

As Belgium and the Netherlands welcome the world’s best hockey teams, the British Embassies in Brussels and The Hague are delighted to see England, Scotland and Wales competing on the world stage.

Qualifying for the World Cup is a tremendous achievement and a tribute to the players, coaches, volunteers and supporters behind every team.

We look forward to an outstanding tournament in Belgium and the Netherlands. Best of luck to England, Scotland and Wales.

Looking to start your career in diplomacy?

The British Embassy in The Hague is offering four Public Policy & Diplomacy internships, giving students the chance to gain practical experience in public affairs, events and policy (energy, science and technology).

You will get to support embassy activities, like monitoring media and creating content, as well as, diplomatic events and policy reporting, while learning from both UK and Dutch colleagues.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds. Applicants must be proficient in English and Dutch and have the right to live and work in the Netherlands.
