dramatic viewpoints and functional rest areas provide enjoyable nature experiences for road travellers who want more than just finding the fastest way from A to B. At Flotane on the Norwegian Scenic Route Aurlandsfjellet, the journey finally reaches the top. After the long climb from fjord to mountain, the landscape opens into gentle ridges and wide plains, with peaks and glaciers stretching into the distance.
The rest area is carefully shaped to the surroundings, with benches and facilities powered entirely by solar energy—where beauty, function and sustainability come together seamlessly.

Når du når Flotane, på toppen av på Nasjonal turistveg Aurlandsfjellet åpner landskapet seg. Etter lange stigninger fra fjord til fjell står du plutselig «oppe» – omgitt av slake høgdedrag, vide sletter og mektige tinder og fonner i det fjerne.
Rasteplassen er varsomt tilpasset stedet, med benker og servicebygg som får all energi fra solcellepanel. Her møtes det vakre, det funksjonelle og det miljøvennlige i ett og samme grep.

Stegastein is one of the most iconic viewpoints along the Norwegian Scenic Route Aurlandsfjellet, soaring 650 metres above the Aurlandsfjord. The dramatic viewing platform, designed by architects Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen, creates the thrilling sensation of floating above the landscape.
We’re happy to share that the toilets are now open and fully operational, following some technical challenges after the winter season. A perfect stop to take in the view – and take a break.

Stegastein er eit av dei mest ikoniske utsiktspunkta langs Nasjonale turistveg Aurlandsfjellet – 650 meter over Aurlandsfjorden. Den spektakulære utsiktsplattforma, som gir ei kjensle av å sveve over fjorden, er teikna av arkitektane Todd Saunders og Tommie Wilhelmsen.

Work has started at Stapnes 👷‍♂️
The rest area along County Road 44 in Eigersund is being upgraded as part of the Norwegian Scenic Routes development in Rogaland. The existing facility from the 1990s will be replaced with a new service building, viewpoint and parking area.
The new rest area is designed as a long platform that follows the landscape towards the sea, with seating, toilets and information gathered under one roof. The site will be universally designed and have capacity for 14 cars.
The goal is to improve quality, accessibility and the overall experience. Completion is planned for summer 2027.

No er arbeidet i gang på Stapnes 👷‍♂️
Rasteplassen langs fylkesveg 44 i Eigersund blir no oppgradert som del av satsinga på Nasjonale turistveger i Rogaland. Det eksisterande anlegget frå 1990-talet blir erstatta med eit nytt servicebygg, utsiktspunkt og parkeringsplass.
Den nye rasteplassen er utforma som ei lang plattform som følgjer landskapet utover mot havet – med sitjeplassar, toalett og informasjon samla under eitt tak. Anlegget blir universelt utforma og får kapasitet til 14 bilar.
Målet er betre kvalitet, tilgjenge og oppleving langs vegen. Ferdigstillelse er planlagt sommaren 2027.

The upgrade of Jøssingfjord is well underway 👷‍♀️
The rest area at Jøssingfjord in Sokndal is being transformed with a new viewpoint, rest area and service building, all carefully adapted to the dramatic landscape above the fjord.
The new toilet building will be cast in black concrete and placed at the edge of the cliff. A universally designed path, cut into the rock, will connect the parking area, rest area and viewpoint.
The project includes a new parking area for 14 cars, aiming to improve accessibility and strengthen the overall experience along the Norwegian Scenic Routes. Completion is planned for summer 2027.

Oppgraderinga av Jøssingfjord er godt i gang 👷‍♀️
Rasteplassen ved Jøssingfjord i Sokndal får eit heilt nytt anlegg med utsiktspunkt, rasteområde og servicebygg – alt tilpassa det dramatiske landskapet over fjorden.
Det nye toalettbygget blir plasstøypt i svart betong og plassert ytst mot berget. Ein universelt utforma sti, skoren inn i fjellet, knyter saman parkering, rasteplass og utsiktspunkt.
Anlegget får ny parkeringsplass for 14 bilar, og målet er betre tilgjenge og sterkare opplevingar langs Nasjonale turistveger. Ferdigstilling er planlagt sommaren 2027.

Set in a remarkable cultural landscape by the waterfall, Atnbrufossen Vannbruksmuseum is a unique stop along the Norwegian Scenic Route Rondane. Once a sawmill, timber‑floating facility and hydropower station, the site has been transformed into a museum and cultural venue, nestled among slender birch trees beside the rushing water.
The understated architecture allows nature to take centre stage. Both architecture and landscape architecture were designed by LJB AS – Lars Berge, creating a calm, respectful dialogue between building, history and landscape.
A rewarding pause on your journey through Rondane – where water, culture and scenery come together.

Midt i det verneverdige kulturlandskapet ved Atnbrufossen, langs Nasjonale turistveg Rondane, ligger Atnbrufossen Vannbruksmuseum – også kjent som Fossehuset. Den tidligere saga, fløtningsanlegget og kraftstasjonen har fått nytt liv som museum og kulturarena, vakkert plassert i en lys bjørkeskog ved fossen.
Bygget er utformet med stor respekt for omgivelsene, der moderne arkitektur møter industrihistorie og naturens egne krefter. Arkitektur og landskapsarkitektur er signert LJB AS – Lars Berge, og helheten gir besøkende en stille, nær opplevelse av både vannets kraft og landskapets historie.
Et naturlig stopp langs reisen gjennom Rondane – for refleksjon, kunnskap og naturopplevelser.

Gamle Strynefjellsvegen – County Road 258
Despite very little snow this year, the full length of Gamle Strynefjellsvegen (Fv. 258) will not open to traffic until mid‑June. The section from Videsæter to the summer ski centre is scheduled to open on Friday 22 May at 08:00, while the rest of the road remains closed. Considerations for wild reindeer, as well as snow clearing and road drying, are key reasons for the delayed opening. [nasjonalet...stveger.no]
The Norwegian Scenic Route Gamle Strynefjellsvegen runs between Grotli and Videsæter and is a historic mountain road built by hand in the late 19th century. Protected since 2009, it is renowned for its stone walls, guard stones and dramatic high‑mountain scenery.
A highlight along the route is the Videfossen viewpoint, located on the Gamle Strynefjellsvegen stretch. Here, visitors experience the power of the waterfall up close, right at the edge of the Hjelledalen valley.

Gamle Strynefjellsvegen – Fv. 258
Trass i svært lite snø blir heile Gamle Strynefjellsvegen (Fv. 258) ikkje opna for trafikk før i midten av juni. Frå Videsæter til sommarskisenteret er vegen planlagt opna fredag 22. mai kl. 08.00, medan resten av strekninga held fram med å vere stengd. Omsyn til villrein, samt behov for fresing og tørking av vegen, ligg til grunn for avgjerda. [nasjonalet...stveger.no]
Den nasjonale turistvegen Gamle Strynefjellsvegen går mellom Grotli og Videsæter og er eit levande kulturminne – bygd med handmakt på slutten av 1800-talet og freda i 2009. Langs strekninga finn du fleire stoppunkt som forsterkar opplevinga av landskapet.
Eitt av dei mest ikoniske er utsiktspunktet Videfossen, som ligg på strekninga Gamle Strynefjellsvegen. Her kjem du tett på dei mektige vassmassane som stuper ned i Hjelledalen.

By Lake Atnsjøen, along the Norwegian Scenic Route Rondane, you’ll find Sohlbergplassen – a viewpoint that frames the landscape almost exactly as depicted in Harald Sohlberg’s famous painting Winter’s Night in Rondane. The gently curving concrete platform hovers among slender pine trees, offering a quiet, intimate encounter with the rounded mountains and shimmering waters of Rondane.

Wheelchair accessible and thoughtfully placed, Sohlbergplassen is an invitation to slow down and truly see the landscape.

Strømbu is one of the main gateways to the mountains of Rondane and a natural stop along the Norwegian Scenic Routes Rondane. Located by the gently flowing river Atna, this rest area offers close contact with nature at the edge of Norway’s first national park.
The site features a roof terrace and a sheltered lounge, carefully placed in the landscape. Designed by architect Carl‑Viggo Hølmebakk, Strømbu demonstrates how architecture along the Norwegian Scenic Routes enhances the experience of nature through simplicity, precision and respect for the surroundings.
A place to pause, breathe, and experience the calm rhythm of the Rondane mountains.

Folldal Mines is one of Norway’s most important technical and industrial heritage sites, and a memorable stop along the Norwegian Scenic Route Rondane. With around 70 well-preserved buildings, the historic mining community lies beautifully framed by the mountain landscape leading towards Rondane National Park.
The information point and viewpoint invite visitors to pause and reflect, combining history, nature and landscape in a calm and thoughtful way. The site is carefully shaped with respect for its surroundings, designed by landscape architect Landskapsfabrikken AS, led by Inge Dahlman.
Folldal Mines offers a powerful encounter with Norway’s industrial past – set in the heart of dramatic mountain scenery.

Infopunktet og utsiktsplassen gir deg både kunnskap og ro – et sted der natur, historie og landskap smelter sammen. Tiltaket er utformet med stor respekt for stedet og omgivelsene, med landskapsarkitekt Landskapsfabrikken AS ved Inge Dahlman bak den landskapsarkitektoniske utformingen.

Gudbrandsjuvet offers a powerful encounter between water, rock and architecture along Norwegian Scenic Routes Geiranger–Trollstigen. Over thousands of years, the Valldøla river has carved deep potholes and sculptural forms into the gorge, now experienced from viewing platforms right at the edge.
The site is designed by Jensen & Skodvin Arkitektkontor, with an integrated approach to architecture and landscape, where bridges and platforms are carefully shaped to follow the terrain and enhance the natural drama.
☕🚻 From Monday 18 May, the café and restrooms will be in normal operation, making Gudbrandsjuvet a fully serviced stop along Norwegian Scenic Routes Geiranger–Trollstigen.

Gudbrandsjuvet er et dramatisk møte mellom vann, stein og arkitektur langs Nasjonale turistveger Geiranger–Trollstigen. Her har elva Valldøla gjennom tusener av år formet dype jettegryter og komplekse formasjoner i fjellet, opplevd på nært hold fra utsiktsplattformer helt i juvkanten.
Anlegget er utformet av Jensen & Skodvin Arkitektkontor, med en helhetlig tilnærming til både arkitektur og landskap, der broer og plattformer følger terrenget og forsterker naturens drama.
☕🚻 Fra mandag 18. mai er kafé og toaletter i normal drift, og Gudbrandsjuvet er igjen et fullt tilrettelagt stoppested langs Nasjonale turistveger Geiranger–Trollstigen.
