The city of Tensen as a head quarter of Palpa district, Western Development Region is a historical town. With the introduction of new federal structure, this City remains as a part of Province 5. The region was ruled by the kings of Sena Dynasty before the unification of Nepal. In the beginning, the palace of Sena kings was located at Bhairavstan and it was moved to the hill of Srinagara from the time of Mahadutta Sena. The medieval kingdom of Palpa was collapsed during the time of Prithivipal Sen. He was called to Kathmandu on a pretext that the king Rana Bhahadur Shaha wanted to marry his sister . But upon his arrival in Kathmandu he was captivated. Then, King Rana Bhahadur Shah sent Amar Singh Thapa and Dalabhanjan Pandey to capture Palpa in 1804 A.D . They attacked Srinagara in the evening and the member of royal family stying there were fired away. This way, the sena Dynasty of Palpa with a history of three hundred years was collapsed and Palpa was annexed to Nepal without any bloodshed. After the conquest of palpa , Kaji Amar Singh Thapa was entrusted as Chief Governor of Palpa . He constructed an official residence for himself and also built an administrative building to deliver servicer to the people . The initial town of Tansen was introduced by Amar Singh Thapa and he also made some temples, resting place, pond and water conduits to cater the needs of local people. He is honored for his works tii today . The original Nepali architecture of Palpa Durbar was changed by the Badahakim, the local Governor, during Rana period. The present appearance of the Durbar was introduced by Pratap shumsher , who served as a governor , of Palpa from 1925 A.D.to 1932 A.D. Till the time of Rana regime, Palpa entertained the status of second capital of the whole region west of Kathmandu. Later 1949 A.D., Palpa was given the full authority to handle civil, judicial and military administration encompassing all areas between the Kali Gandaki and Mahakali River . Palpa Durbar was entirely damage during the time of attack launched by Maoist insurgents on January 31,2006 .The Durbar again got its original shape and appearance after the renovation done by Department of Archaeology between 2007 and 2013 A.D. The local people after a series of discussion, finally decided to convert the Durbar into a museum. With the permission given by the Departmemt of Archaeology,Palpa museum was legally initiated on januray 17,2016. Palpa Durbar complex covers an area of five ropanies land is considered as the First biggest monument in district. This four-storey Durbarbuilt in rectangular shape has 41 rooms in total with an entrance on the eastern side. The presence of two towers called burja, kept on either side of the Durbar , has made the Frontal view much more beautiful and attractive. There is an open courtyard, chowk,on the middle part of building. This building was used for the administrative purposes during Rana period. After the renovation, this Durbar complex converted into a museum, only the six rooms of the second floor are in use as a gallery of the museum.
