Celium - in the right place for the right time!

A native Australian Tinka (goanna) sprung a cat trap this week, but the Indigenous Desert Alliance Tjakura Rangers were promptly alerted via Celium and released it safely within minutes. Fast response matters when it’s 41°C out!

We are proud to see Celium supporting rangers protecting Country and wildlife.

Wrong place, wrong time for this poor Tinka (goanna) who got sprung in a cat trap this week! Luckily for the Tinka, the Central Land Council Tjakura Rangers use Celium alert technology, so they were alerted via email that the trap had gone off and were able to release it within 15 mins. Quick turnaround is important when it's 41º out! 🦎

The Christmas Island Parks team have been hard at work getting their Celium network expansion out before these guys arrived. Up against crabs and the rainy season!

Awesome news! Well done!

Great work team!

NRM Regions Australia CEO Dr Kate Andrews has been lucky enough to attend the National Landcare Conference on the Gold Coast this week - and the efforts of regional NRM organisations have been on show!

The Dudley Peninsula Feral Cat Eradication team presented on their nation-leading cat control work on Kangaroo Island, which has deployed 270 4G connected cameras through an AI platform to enable near real time monitoring of both feral cat capture, and presence, across the eradication area. Combined with a trapping blitz, a Feline Hotline, and exclusion fencing, and strong community and First Nations partnerships, feral cats are now at their lowest numbers since the program commenced.

Congratulations to Kangaroo Island Landscape Board staff Paul Jennings and Chantelle Geissler and Ronald Boland of Tracks in the Sand on their great presentation - and on their integrated pest management and collaborative efforts to protect biodiversity this !

Love seeing these collaborations in action!
Fantastic work by AW and Yalata Rangers protecting hooded plovers with smart tech in the dunes. While it might sound like magic, Celium is quietly connecting traps, delivering alerts, and helping teams stay one step ahead of feral predators.
Proud to be part of this important conservation effort! 🐦🛠️

Thank you for continuing to bring issues like this to our attention.
Keep up the good work Forest & Bird.

🚨 Surprised to see wetland destruction listed as a tax-deductible expense? So were we.

Forest & Bird has raised concerns with Inland Revenue Te Tari Taake after it released official tax guidance that uses the example of draining a wetland as a business expense eligible for a deduction.

💧 Wetlands are precious taonga 💚 Home to endangered species, they provide natural flood protection and are key to clean water & climate resilience.

📄 Draining wetlands is usually illegal and undermines NZ’s conservation and climate goals, yet the IRD seems to be promoting it as a smart financial move!?

💬 “We had to read this twice to believe it,” says Forest & Bird’s Regional Conservation Manager, Scott Burnett. “I'd have hoped that IRD would have looked at their examples carefully and made sure they were watertight. This is just really unhelpful and actually sends the wrong signals at a time when environmental protection has never been more urgent.

"What is even scarier is that the government has recently put out proposals that are looking to actually weaken wetland protections, opening the door to destruction of some of the few that we have left.”

❗We’ve flagged this to IRD and have asked them to remove this example and align with New Zealand’s environmental laws and conservation goals.

Ultimately, we need focused, national, and regional efforts to protect and restore our few remaining wetlands. Since European settlement, New Zealand has lost around 90% of its wetlands – and government agencies, community groups, and taxpayers are investing millions into their restoration.
