The label formed in June 2005 when the two label partners were presented with an opportunity to release an album by an American producer duo called DJ T-Rock and Squashy Nice. In the U.S both DJ T-Rock and Squashy Nice, had already released a sizable body of work as separate entities. After seeing the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and falling in love with New Zealand - T-Rock and Squashy Nice wished t
o create a connection to New Zealand for their new collaborative project together. At that time the 'Rock and Squash' project was unsigned and Why Records was merely just an 'idea'. 'Rock and Squash presented the Techniques' album to the label partners for an exclusive global release, which in turn kicked the Why Records label into operation. The release of the first 'Rock and Squash – Techniques' album proved to be a success. People across the world were quick to fall in love with the track 'Pretty Girl With A Crooked Smile' featured on the album. The track went on to becoming selected for the Ministry Of Sound compilation 'Hedkandi'. In 2008 'Pretty Girl' was again selected for a compilation release out of Milan Italy entitled 'Streets Of Fashion Tokyo'. Then in 2009 a lounge music compilation 'Sunset Paradise' out of Filothei, Greece also requested the pleasure of 'Pretty Girl With A Crooked Smile..' The track still continues to receive much interest and acclaim from across the world. Why released the second album from 'Rock and Squash' entitled 'OutLoud'. The albums influences was a reflection of Rock and Squashys connection with their own history of growing up loving Hip Hop, and childhoods surrounded by Southern roots music. 'Outloud' featured a collaborative concept. Invitations included MC's such as 'I Self Divine', Azeem, and friends Mr Dibb's, the legendary DJ Quest, and the now deceased MC 'Jax'. OutLoud presented a slight diversifying of styles from that of the debut 'Techniques' album - but at the same time it was still important to the duo to produce an album that seeked to please as many ear's as possible, seeking to extend to a wider audience and not only that of Hip Hop enthusiasts. Why Records label partners have definite plans in the near future to focus on releasing a local New Zealand music project. Why seeks to be more about quality music, and releasing albums that they feel passionate about. So-Far all Why Releases have shared a common thread providing a refreshing breeze of beats that seem fitting with so many different human moods.
