🌧️ Kia mataara e te whānau – be prepared, stay ready.

As Tropical Cyclone Vaianu approaches Te Tai Tokerau, we are urging our hapori to take this seriously and prepare now. With heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding expected, our rohe - already impacted by recent weather - remains especially vulnerable.

Please take time to secure your homes, check drains, gather emergency supplies, and avoid unnecessary travel over the coming days.

At Tuhiata Mahiora, the safety and wellbeing of our whānau is our priority. Stay connected, look out for one another, and keep up to date with official guidance.

MetService is tracking Tropical Cyclone Vaianu which is forecast to move southwards bringing severe wind and rain to New Zealand over the weekend.

To prepare for this:

🐶 Make a plan for your whānau and pets.
⚠️ Bring inside or tie down anything that strong winds could break or pick up. If you have a trampoline, turn it upside down to minimise the surface area exposed to wind and tie it down firmly.
🌲 Remove any debris or loose items from around your property. Branches and firewood can become airborne in strong winds.
🏡 Check on your neighbours and anyone who might need your help.
🐄 Move farm animals to areas that are safe from flooding and high winds.
🚮 Clear waste and debris away from drains.
🔦 Be prepared with torches and have a solar or battery powered radio so you can keep up with the latest news and alerts.

Stay up to date with the latest weather information from MetService New Zealand.

This can be a stressful time. If you need to talk to somebody, you can free text or call 1737 to speak to a counsellor, call Healthline on 0800 611 116 or talk to your local GP.

Please share this information with whānau, friends and neighbours.
