A proud moment for our community!

What a great day attending the official opening of the new helipad! Our brigade was proud to be part of the occasion and to see the impressive new H145 Helicopter.

Congratulations to everyone involved in delivering such a valuable asset for our village and the wider community.

🚒 Training Night – Tuesday

On Tuesday night, our brigade took part in a realistic fire scenario at the Chisholm Block, Queen Mary Hospital.

Crews were faced with thick smoke conditions and put their breathing apparatus skills to the test while searching the building to rescue four patients located throughout the maze of rooms. It was an excellent opportunity to practise working in a challenging environment, and everyone did a fantastic job.

We were also joined by members of the Culverden, Waiau, and Hanmer Rural Fire Brigades. For many of them, it was their first time inside the Chisholm Block, making the exercise even more valuable as they familiarised themselves with the building’s unique layout.

A huge thank you to everyone involved for another successful night of training and teamwork.

🔥 Have you ever thought about joining the fire brigade? Whether you want to be on the front line or support the brigade in a less hands-on role, there’s a place for everyone. We’d love to hear from you—get in touch today and find out how you can make a difference in your community.

🚨 Ever wondered why our fire siren still sounds? 🚨

It remains one of the most reliable ways to let our volunteer firefighters know they’re needed—right now.

When someone calls 111, every minute counts. Our volunteers receive alerts through pagers, apps, phone calls and text messages, but technology isn’t perfect. Coverage can drop, messages can be delayed, and systems can fail. The siren provides a vital backup.

We know it’s loud. It may interrupt your day or wake you during the night—and we genuinely appreciate your understanding.

When you hear it, remember what may be happening nearby: someone could be facing one of the worst moments of their life. At the same time, our firefighters are leaving dinner, stepping away from work, getting out of bed, or pausing precious family time to help.

That siren is more than noise. It’s the sound of your community answering the call.

This Volunteer Week, we’re proud to celebrate the dedicated members of our Fire Brigade🚨

Behind every uniform is a volunteer who gives their time, skills, and commitment to help keep our community safe — whether it’s responding to emergencies, training after hours, supporting local events, or being there when needed most.

We also acknowledge the families, employers, and supporters who stand behind our volunteers and make their service possible.

Thank you to all our brigade members for your dedication, teamwork, and service to the community. We are proud of you all.

We are currently looking for more locals to join our crew.

Today, we proudly stand with fire services around the world to recognise International Firefighters’ Day.

Here at our brigade, we’re incredibly proud of our team. Whether responding to emergencies, supporting our community, or training to stay ready, their dedication never goes unnoticed.

To our firefighters, volunteers, and support crews—thank you for your service, your resilience, and your unwavering commitment.

Today, on ANZAC Day, we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who came before us.

As firefighters, we understand the meaning of standing together, answering the call, and serving something greater than ourselves. The spirit of the ANZACs lives on in every act of bravery, teamwork, and commitment to protecting our community.

We honour those who served and those who continue to serve.

Lest we forget.

🚨 This says it perfectly… and it’s no different here in Hanmer. 🚨

When the siren sounds in Hanmer Springs, it’s your neighbours, workmates, friends and family responding — leaving dinners, jobs, warm beds and busy lives to answer the call.

Behind every callout is a team of local volunteers juggling everyday life to be there when our community needs us most. Some jobs are quick. Some are long. Some stay with you. But we always reset, restock, and get ready to do it all again.

That’s volunteer life.❤️

We train every Tuesday night at 7pm, and we’re always keen to welcome new members — especially if you’re available during the day.

If you’ve ever thought about joining, come down to the station on a Tuesday at 7pm for a chat. No pressure, just a chance to see what we’re about and ask questions.

Your community needs you. 🚒🔥

This weekend is set to be a scorcher! 🌞💨

That comes with Extreme Fire Danger though. So to ensure everyone is safe over the weekend we are suspending all active fire permits from 11:59pm Friday 9th January until 08:00 Monday 12th January.

We are encouraging everyone to do the following over the weekend:
❌ Do not light any fires during this time.
🕵Check on any previous burn piles - even if they are over a week old
🌾People should be careful carrying out any hot works, or works that cause sparks, including mowing lawns in the cooler parts of the day like the early morning (sorry neighbours)
🔥If you see any smoke or flames, call 111 immediately!

We are still in a Restricted Fire Season, so if you are planning to light a fire after this weekend go to www.checkitsalright.nz and apply for a permit. All permits that were suspended will be active again after 08:00am Monday 12th January.
