Despite the weather, the Houhora Christmas Parade went ahead without a hitch.
It was great to see lots of new floats lined up with our emergency service vehicles.
Unfortunately our fire trucks and police were called to an incident as they approached the Houhora Heads Holiday Park, so you may have missed them.
Congratulations to the organizers and participants on a fantastic effort.
On behalf of our emergency services, we wish everyone a safe and happy festive season.

Last night at the Houhora Big Game & Sports Fishing Club, the Houhora Volunteer Fire Brigade held their yearly Honors night dinner.
Twenty-four of our finest volunteers, Life members and their partners, including special guests VSO Josh Puckey and his wife Kori Puckey, Immediate Past President of the Northland Fire Brigade Sub Association were treated to the fabulous food and service provided by Lisa Everitt and her team.

The service bars as follows were presented by Kori.
Phil Nattrass Gold 2-year bar for an incredible 56 years’ service.
Guy Herring Gold 2-year bar for an equally impressive 49 years' service.
Chief Fire Officer Gareth Walters silver 2-year bar for 7 years' service.

Two other station awards were presented by Gareth.
Congratulations to Deputy Fire Officer Ethan Gibbons for receiving the Attendance Trophy, with a 98% attendance record.
Te Hapua volunteer and crew leader Paris Waenga was a well-deserved recipient of the β€˜Fireman of the Year trophy. Paris represented our brigade at the UFBA conference this year. Paris’s enthusiasm and commitment to ensuring the very top of the north has a dedicated emergency service rightly earned him this award. Congratulations Paris.

Many of our volunteers have spent personal time attending courses this year, none more so the Paris and Ethan. They have attended the following FENZ courses Leadership, Volunteer Executive Officer, Coordinated Incident Management, Leaders Conference and Initial Response Controller, just to name a few.
The Te Hapua crew are a valuable asset to their community, turning up to most practices (around trip of 110km) and attending the mandatory firefighting courses. Well done guys.

Last but not least, Gareth had a special mention for a couple that work away quietly cleaning the station, gardening, and magically making the bottles and rubbish disappear each week and are no doubt responsible for lots of other odd jobs around the station. Gareth presented Karen and Guy Herring with a HBG&SFC voucher and flowers for Karen. Thank you both, your work is much appreciated.

On behalf of the Houhora Volunteer Fire Brigade, a big thankyou to Lisa and her team for the awesome evening.
We wish all communities a safe and happy festive season πŸŽ„πŸŽ…πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘§

As a crew, you are an asset to your community and our brigade πŸ™‚.

Nine locals now train weekly to handle fires, crashes and medical calls.

Fireworks are fun β€” fires aren’t!!!!

Light them in a clear open space, keep water or a hose handy, and never go back to a dud.

Keep kids and pets well back, and soak used fireworks before you discard them.

Celebrate safely and help us keep it fire-free! πŸ”₯πŸš’

Northland fire chiefs are asking the public to check if conditions are right before lighting outdoor fires.

Northland fire chiefs are asking the public to check if conditions are right before lighting outdoor fires.
Extreme weather has fanned wildfires in the upper South Island and Hawkes Bay, and fire risk is very high in parts of the country experiencing warm temperatures, extreme winds and low humidity.

Te Tai Tokerau Northland Assistant Commander, Denis Cooper, says the region is currently in an open fire season except for a restricted season across Muriwhenua in the Far North and a prohibited fire season for all Department of Conservation islands.

He says little or no rain over the past few weeks means conditions in Northland are dry, increasing the difficulty of controlling fires quickly once they have started.

β€œAs we have seen previously, it takes a large number of our fire brigades, many of them volunteers, with supporting resources and aircraft to contain and control wildfires in Northland,” he says.

It took eight days to extinguish a wildfire at Cape Reinga in 2023 at a cost of more than $1.5m.

β€œIt’s these sorts of fires we are trying to avoid, so please go to checkitslaright.nz before lighting a fire,” he says.

There, you will find the fire danger rating for your area and fire season status as well as weather conditions and fire safety requirements.

And remember, to make sure your fire is always completely extinguished afterwards.

Disappointing to see our new shed has been broken into.
Not sure what you were hoping to find, but we keep nothing of value in here worth stealing, unless you were intending to fight a fire, you wasted your time 😠.

Sometimes we receive koha from people and organisations in the community. These can be for a for a variety of reasons, fishing competitions, fundraisers, items for raffles or donations from members of the community. Occasionally we also get asked what we use the money for.
Usually, we wait until we have a project that requires some of those funds. This year we needed to have a new home for our old deteriorating pump shed. We purchased a kitset shed from Total Span in Kaitaia, and a few of our multiskilled volunteers concreted the floor, assembled the shed, and fitted it with shelving to store truck washing equipment and extra hoses.
Number 2 on our wish list was to add a ranch slider for easier access to our existing 40ft container that houses our excess gear. We managed to get a second-hand ranch slider which was installed by our team's volunteer tradesmen.
We also use these extra funds to purchase equipment or replace items around the station.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their support and contributions over the years, they really do make a difference πŸ˜ƒ.
