Kia ora Northland, MetService New Zealand has this morning (Monday 6 April) upgraded the existing Heavy Rain Watch to an Orange Warning ahead of the subtropical low that is expected to approach Northland overnight tonight.

Unfortunately, it is the north and east of the region that again face the potential of being the most affected.

During the 18 hours from 10pm tonight to 4pm tomorrow (Tuesday), 90 to 120 mm of rain is expected, especially in the north and east of the region. Peak rates may reach 25 to 40 mm/h in possible thunderstorms and localised downpours tomorrow morning.

The Strong Wind Watch remains in place, with east to northeast winds which may approach severe gale in exposed places during the period from 3am tomorrow to 4pm tomorrow.

The key advice is to use today to prepare your property and possessions (if you haven't already), and take extreme care on the roads tomorrow, particularly in the morning when there is the possibility of surface flooding, debris and slips on the roads. And don't take chances driving through floodwaters.

BRIDGE WASHOUT - RAWHITI ROAD
**UPDATE 8pm 18 Jan**
• Contractors have reopened one-way road access from Russell to Bland Bay. However, they warn that slip debris is extremely slippery and conditions remain treacherous. Motorists are advised not travel unless absolutely necessary.
• WDC contractors plan to deliver rocks and other heavy material to the Rawhiti bridge washout Monday morning. Repairs will start from the southern end of the bridge, which should be reopened Monday. A full assessment of the bridge structure will need to be undertaken before it can be reopened.
• Numerous slips are impacting other roads in the area. The worst hit areas are Rawhiti and Manawaora roads. These have been cleared to allow for one-way traffic with the slip debris will be removed when conditions are drier.

RAWHITI 9.45am 18 Jan**
A Rawhiti Road bridge has been washed out by heavy downpours that hit the coastal area east of Russell overnight. Sudden flood waters have washed out the road abutment on a single-lane bridge located just south of Whangaruru North Road.
Road crews have investigated and heavy machinery is on route to make repairs. However, a number of road slips in the same area is delaying progress of this equipment.
The bridge washout and slips have combined to make travel very difficult for residents and visitors to the area. Northland Civil Defence is aware of the situation and is on standby should evacuations or other assistance be necessary.
We will provide updates as soon as new details are confirmed.
