🚫🔥 Total Fire Ban in Place. Please Read 🔥🚫

With the long weekend coming up and cooler temperatures setting in, we know it can be tempting to light a bonfire on the beach, but this is a reminder that a total fire ban is currently in place.

This means no open fires are permitted, including bonfires.

Lighting a fire during a total fire ban is a serious offence. If prosecuted, penalties can include a fine of up to $300,000 and/or up to 2 years imprisonment.

Please help keep our community, environment, and emergency services safe by respecting the restrictions.

Thank you for doing your part 🔥

Today on International Women’s Day, we recognise and celebrate the incredible women serving in fire brigades across New Zealand. 🚒🇳🇿

From urban stations to rural volunteer brigades, women play a vital role in protecting our communities. They respond to emergencies, support their crews, and show courage, professionalism, and dedication every single day.

Across Aotearoa, women in the fire service continue to break barriers, lead from the front, and inspire the next generation to step forward and serve their communities.

To the women in our brigade and throughout New Zealand’s fire service — thank you for everything you do. Your commitment, resilience, and teamwork make our brigades stronger.

Happy International Women’s Day. 👩‍🚒💜

This fire is permitted and has been approved by FENZ.

🔥 Otago’s fire risk will rise sharply over the next few days with gale force north-westerly winds, high temperatures and low relative humidity expected across most of the region.
🔥 Don’t light any outdoor fires – that means no bonfires, campfires or burn piles.
🔥 Fires will be very challenging for firefighters to put out in gale force winds.
🔥 Sunday and Monday are likely to be particularly hot and windy. Any rain that falls before then is unlikely to reduce the risk significantly.
🔥 If you have had an outdoor fire over the last week, make sure it’s completely out. Don’t just look – rake out the ashes and wet them thoroughly if they’re not completely cold
🔥 Most of inland Otago is already in a restricted fire season, with fire permits required for outdoor fires. If you have a permit, you must follow the conditions.
🔥 Check the weather forecast and www.checkitsalright.nz for advice

🚨🚨 With a few more people at the beach over Christmas, it's a good time for a reminder about the fire siren – if you're new to town, it can give you a bit of a fright, right!

🚒 When the fire siren goes off, it does several things at once:
- it tells volunteer firefighters that they need to respond
- it also reassures people that help is on the way
- plus, it let's the public know that we will be responding, our vehicles will be on the way to the station and the truck will be coming out, so be alert

- it ISN'T a civil defence warning, you don't need to get to higher ground (if that ever happened it would come through the mobile phone alert system - similar to the COVID alerts)

We respond to house fires, fires on the beach, smoke nuisance complaints, garage fires, chimney fires, grass fires, burn offs ... but also, medical calls, motor vehicle accidents, assisting St John, flooding, search & rescue, roofs lifting in bad weather, scene protection at vehicle accidents, landing rescue helicopters, commercial smoke alarms – plus we often assist neighbouring brigades when needed!!

So when you hear the siren, it means help is on the way for someone who needs it. This is especially good for younger people to know 🚨

As always, thanks for your support 👍🏼
