As voting draws to a close, I want to take a moment to sincerely thank the many wonderful people who have supported and encouraged me throughout this journey as a candidate for the Horowhenua District Council.

To those who have offered kind words, sound advice, and valuable guidance — Ka nui te ngākau me te mihi. To the people who have kept me informed about community events, invited me to speak, and shared your life experiences, perspectives, and values — I am truly grateful. Each conversation has strengthened my appreciation for the diversity, resilience, and heart of our community.

A special nod of appreciation goes to those who allowed my rather large head to be displayed proudly on your fences and properties. You have my utmost respect — and perhaps my apologies to your neighbours!

As voting closes today, I encourage everyone to take part and vote for the people you believe will represent our community with integrity, honesty, and common sense. Whether or not I am voted in, my hope is that our Council continues to listen to the voices of our people, provide reasoned and thoughtful leadership, and always remember that we are, first and foremost, servants of our community.

I also want to reaffirm my support for the continuation of Māori Wards. Upholding them is one way we can give effect to the main provisions of the Local Government Act 2002 that honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi — recognising Māori as partners in decision-making and ensuring that Māori voices and perspectives remain represented at the council table.

To all the candidates — good luck! And a big thank you to everyone who has voted — especially those who voted for me.

Ngā mihi nui,
Keremihana Heke

The Latest Inter-College Whanaungatanga Day was held at Horowhenua College on Wednesday. Celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. The focus game was "Ariki". A Māori sport that arms toa (players) with padded rākau and the aim was to hit opposition players 3 times below the knees to get them out. The game is won when the opposition Ariki (Leader) is eliminated.
E ngā rangatahi, ka mau te wehi! Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori!
