Hope everyone is bunkered down for the weekend! Here are some safety tips ahead of cyclone Vaianu hitting tonight.

- Secure loose items such as trampolines, bins, and garden furniture
- Be aware of fallen trees, powerlines, and loose debris
- Stay out of floodwaters and do not drive through them
- Never leave cooking or candles unattended
- Only use generators, barbecues, and outdoor heaters outside in well-ventilated areas

Your own safety is #1 priority- do not travel unnecessarily. If there is any risk to life or property, dial 111. Thank you and stay safe!

We received some delicious Brazilian carrot cupcakes from a grateful member of our community. We don't expect anything for our efforts as volunteers and we are truly humbled when gifts like these come our way. Thank you Leigh Community, it is an honour to serve you.

Leigh Volunteer Fire Brigade attended a call out this fine Sunday arvo, to a ride on mower needing a cool down.
With a hot exhaust on long grass things got too hot and set alight.

Thanks to our crew, the flames & surrounding area were put out using Class A foam & water which helps smother the flames quickly.
Unfortunately the mower won’t be mowing again any time soon…

It just goes to show how dry it is out there.
Be safe out there using machinery and lighting those burn piles. Things can happen very quickly in these dry conditions.

🔥 Are you planning an outdoor fire? 🔥

We’ve seen an increase in calls about smoke in the area, and we want to keep our crews and community safe and informed.

While we are currently in an open fire season, if you’re planning an outdoor fire there are a few simple steps that make a big difference:
• Let us know before you start – Call 0800 336 922 to notify us of your planned burn.
• Take proper safety precautions – Make sure your fire is in the right spot, well managed, monitored, and that you have the tools and water needed to put it out if conditions change. For further advice and quick tips, visit https://www.checkitsalright.nz/reduce-your-risk/burn-piles.
• Burn only when conditions are suitable – Always check the current conditions and whether a permit is required by visiting https://www.checkitsalright.nz/can-i-light-a-fire

Your cooperation helps reduce unnecessary callouts and keeps everyone safer. Thanks for doing your part to protect our community! 🔥🌱

Today, the 31st of December 2025, officially marks 50 Years of service as a Volunteer Fire Fighter for Steve Paddison of the Leigh Volunteer Fire Station. Steve has done 25 of those years as our Chief Fire Officer and has responded to thousands of callouts within our community and spent many more hours training, managing and leading our firefighters to keep us all ready to respond to any 111 callout, 24 hours a day and 7 days per week. Any one who has volunteered will understand how much he has put into this brigade and community. We are all very proud of your efforts Steve, well done.

We've already seen the destructive effects of two fires on public conservation land in the last month, and as the temperature gets higher over summer, so does the risk of more.

Simple things like driving on or mowing dry grass, putting fires out incorrectly, or using gas cookers, can cause wildfires that rip through nature and take years to recover from.

Regardless of how they start, wildfires can be disastrous to our native ecosystems, huts and tracks, and heritage sites, as it was to Tongariro National Park.

So, as fire season continues, when you head out on public conservation land this summer, be extra careful when lighting any fires. We need your help to protect what makes Aotearoa unique.

Today we attended a reasonably large vegetation fire in Ti Point. Thanks to quick action from our crews from Leigh, , , , and support from our general manager Shaun from Takapuna (and a favorable wind direction), we were able to contain it fairly quickly and knock it down.

This fire today highlighted the very dry conditions at the moment, and could have seriously escalated into a much larger incident. Please consider this when you’re lighting fireworks tonight and for the coming months over summer. If in doubt, visit checkitsalright.nz. Stay safe out there! 🔥🔥🔥.

As part of the recent smooth sailing fundraiser, tomorrow from around 8:15am - 9am you might hear our truck sirens going off briefly over this time. Don't be alarmed, it will be for a short time, just enough to put a little fun and excitement to some lucky kids of Leigh school to their day. .

Thanks for the understanding and support!

A special thank you to some wonderful Wāhine of our community who delivered some beautiful food and baking to our brigade tonight during our training, we appreciate the love. Chef Kevin Lawton may need to go on a diet tomorrow because he ate all the cake.
