Adrienne Wilcock, Matamata-Piako

Adrienne Wilcock, Matamata-Piako Strong communities grow with steady leadership. I am keen to continue giving back to my community.

I've demonstrated my commitment to my community initially through active voluntary involvement in community organisations and then in governance.

People have been asking what I do these days. I was thrilled to be a part of the opening of the new Open Country Community Stadium in February. As many if you will know, this was a project that I was very involved with and am very proud of what we achieved. I updated my governance CV and was recently elected onto the Netball WaiBOP Zone board. This is a newly established board that is tasked with making a smooth transition from being under Netball NZ administration. I am excited to circle back to netball, a sport I love, and was actively involved with in Matamata for 20 years, where I was awarded life membership in 2016. Of course tennis is my other love and am yet to get back onto the court.

Hi all
This is my final post and would like to thank everyone who supported me during my time as a Matamata ward councillor since 2016 and the past 3 years as your mayor. It's been a privilege to serve our community.
I wish Ash and the councillors all the best.

As they say one door closes and another will open.

Strong communities grow with steady leadership and this election, continuity is important.
In my time as mayor, we've prioritised essential upgrades and maintenance, focusing on our community's needs - not the nice to haves.

It's time to get your vote in, I hope I can count on yours.

Voting closes at noon on the 11th October.
If you haven't received a voting pack or lost it, you can cast a special vote at any of the council libraries.

I dropped mine in when I went to the supermarket.

Excellent progress being made. With the exterior completed, the interior is now starting to take shape. This project is drawing national attention with its innovative partnership between council, community and the Ministry of Education. Thanks to everyone who has supported this project - a massive team effort.👏

I attended the 100 year celebration of Rural Women in NZ alongside my local mayoral colleagues and some MPs today. It also coincided with Suffrage Day, when the 1893 Electoral Act, granted women the right to vote- making New Zealand the first country in the world to do so. Rural Women was once the Women's Division of Federated Farmers, for which my late mother was once a member. There is a longstanding affiliation with Federated Farmers, Waikato Federated Farmers, who also were well represented today.

Dame Patsy Reddy was the guest speaker. She was born in Matamata but didn't live here. Due to the lack of maternal facilities in the Te Akau area where her father taught, they came to her maternal grandparents farm at Taihoa for the pending birth then headed back to their home.
A trailblazer in her own right, after completing her secondary education at Hamilton Girls' High School, she headed to Victoria University to complete a law degree. Many will remember her as our previous Governor General and a past Chairperson of the NZRFU.
Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate and I both attended HGHS. I was a boarder at Sonninghill Hostel and we chatted with some students in attendance, two of whom were also "hostel girls".
An awesome day celebrating a significant milestone.

We celebrated local businesses at our 2025 Bayleys Business NIght Out recently. Thanks Cooper Aitken for sponsoring our guest speaker, Lisa O'Neill.
We were well and truly entertained and came away with some interesting insights.
Firstly "Excellence is a choice".
Another was for parents who talk about "the empty nest". Lisa described herself as a "bird launcher". That certainly set everyone alight with laughter and obviously resonated. We bring up our children and encourage them to head out into the big wide world.

Thanks again to Bayleys Waikato for sponsoring our 2025 Business Night Out that I lead last week alongside Deputy Mayor James Thomas, as our MC. Always a great night to celebrate local businesses and the broader role they play in making our district a great place to live. This isn't just about providing great service and employment, but also to acknowledge their support if local volunteer groups in their endeavours to make a positive difference in our community. 👏👏👏

✨ What a fantastic night celebrating local success at the Matamata Piako Business Night Out! ✨

Bayleys Matamata was proud to be the main sponsor of this year’s event. Congratulations to all the winners on your well-deserved recognition, and to everyone who entered—you’re all helping to make our community thrive. 🌟

We are so lucky to be part of such a passionate and hardworking business community here in the Matamata Pikao District. 💙

Another week has flown by with a variety of events and meetings in my diary. Our district is a member of the Future Proof sub-region lead by independent chair Bill Wasley, where I have represented Matamata-Piako alongside fellow colleagues: Susan O'Regan - Waipā Mayor, Paula Southgate- Hamilton Mayor, Jacqui Church- Waikato DC Mayor and Pamela Storey - Waikato Regional Council Chair
We have worked well together and are acutely aware of the economic development opportunities that our location within the Golden Triangle brings. There is an ongoing focus on the Hamilton to Auckland connection and now the Hamilton to Tauranga corridor has been included in the discussions. Planning ahead and engaging with Government Ministers and agencies are integral to this work.

I had the pleasure of attending the Hato Hone St John North Waikato Service Awards ceremony along with Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate and Councillor Tim Macindoe on Saturday. It was fabulous to see Lynne, Shaz, Hilary and Harriet recognised for their service. Pictured here with Trish, who handed out some of the awards, with our district recipents. Lynne received her service bar from Guy Salmon and Mayor Paula. Also present at the awards were three generations of St John volunteers from our community: Mary Steiner with her son Richard and granddaughter Ella. Thank you all for your service along with all who serve our community to provide this essential service.

I had the privilege of being a guest speaker at the launch of Rail Safety Week on Monday, 11th August at an event hosted by the Right Honourable Winston Peters in the Grand Room at Parliament. My address included acknowledging the recent tragedy and that Matamata is bisected by the railway line and highway 27 and for generations, locals have been taking shortcuts across the tracks with many not realising it's actually illegal. I also mentioned my advocacy for a new crossing over the rail line and highway at the southern end of town.
Matamata is growing and I have managed to get external funding for an independent feasibility study through the connections I have made in recent years. I am very hopeful it will prove the need. This isn't just about convenience- it's about ensuring community safety and connectivity are properly addressed.
