Where to Recycle Batteries in Nelson and Richmond?

Household batteries – including AA, AAA, button, rechargeable and lithium-ion (up to small power-tool size) – can be dropped off free of charge at several locations in Nelson and Richmond.

BUT super important: do NOT put batteries in your rubbish or kerbside recycling bin. Why? Because they regularly cause fires in rubbish trucks and at the York Valley landfill site!

If you’re searching for battery recycling in Nelson, or battery recycling in Richmond, or wondering where to dispose of batteries near me, here’s exactly where to go.

Nelson gets called “sleepy” by people who don’t live here.

What they usually mean is:

It’s not loud.
It’s not rushed.
And it doesn’t revolve around impressing strangers.

That’s not sleepiness.

That’s a different set of priorities.

And for the people who choose to live here, that difference matters.

Living in Nelson comes with trade-offs.

The views don’t pay the mortgage.
Sunshine doesn’t cover the grocery bill.
And “lifestyle” doesn’t show up on a payslip.

Plenty of people here earn less than they could elsewhere.

And still choose to stay.

Because what you lose in income, you gain in time.
In access.
In knowing the place - and being known.

It’s not for everyone.

But for the people who choose it, it’s a decision they keep making.

People talk about Nelson like it’s an escape from the “real world”.

For most people who live here, it is the real world.

Jobs. Kids. Bills. Weather.
Long days. Early starts.

Just with better views.

Living here doesn’t remove pressure.
It just changes the backdrop.

And most locals wouldn’t swap it.

Everyone thinks Nelson is just sunshine, beaches, and a nice place to retire.

That’s the postcard version.

The real Nelson is early starts.
Small businesses grafting quietly.
People juggling work, family, weather, and rising costs. In one of the most beautiful places in the country.

It’s creative.
It’s practical.
It’s community-driven.

Living here isn’t a holiday.
It’s a life.

And for a lot of people, that’s exactly why they stay.
