Today, on Girmit Remembrance Day, I pay my deepest respect to all the Girmitiyas — the brave Indian indentured labourers who arrived in Fiji between 1879 and 1916 and sacrificed so much for future generations.
As an Indian, a community member, a fellow human being, and a local board member, I stand with all our Fijian families, brothers, sisters, friends, and colleagues in remembering their pain, resilience, courage, and contribution to Fiji and the world.
The story of the first ship, the Leonidas, and the journey of over 60,000 Girmitiyas is not just history — it is a legacy of strength, unity, hard work, and hope. Their struggles and sacrifices built strong communities and created bonds that continue across generations and countries today.
On this 147th anniversary, let us honour their memory by promoting unity, respect, compassion, and cultural harmony among all people.
To all our Fijian communities — Vinaka Vakalevu, and heartfelt respect to your ancestors and families.
