DOC Growing Voices: A youth conservation platform

DOC Growing Voices: A youth conservation platform A united collective made by, and for, the youth of Canterbury that have a passion for conservation.

Stemming from a DOC run workshop series in 2016, we have carried on the aims and inspirations of the series; by creating a platform for youth that have an interest in conservation. Conservation is a multi-faceted topic, bringing together biodiversity, recreation, and culture, together celebrating New Zealand's natural and historic heritage. It is our aim to connect youth on this topic, and for us

as an entity to be a powerful voice on conservation in New Zealand. From grass roots projects such as hands on restoration initiatives, to influencing decision making, the sky is the limit. You, me and everyone else on this page has an equal say on what direction we are heading, and it is up to us as a collective to reach the targets. Whether it is climbing a mountain, knowledge of New Zealand's native species, or a simple appreciation for green spaces, you are welcome here. All values and perspectives are welcomed and encouraged to provide a voice that truly reflects the youth of Aotearoa. Note: This page is run by the youth of Aotearoa, not the Department of Conservation.

Interested in being a part of a trapping program in Omahu Bush Reserve on the port hills? We here at DOC Growing Voices, in conjunction with the Summit road society conservation group, have a trapline in the pipelines specifically for the youth of the area to take ownership of. So watch this space, and get excited about protecting a piece of paradise on the edge of your community, which thankfully wasnt effected by the fires.

FYI: The up and coming meeting to sort out the next steps (funding, equipment, etc) will be publicised here soon :) (y)

Kia Ora Everyone

Do you want to be a part of the Restoration of a beautiful Reserve?
Evan’s Pass Reserve is an awesome little reserve sitting on the slopes of the port hills between Summit Road and Evans Pass Road, overlooking Sumner. It’s overrun with grass and invasive species and needs some native inspiration.
We have the opportunity to restore this site to its former native glory and call it our own! First we need to knock out the weeds.
After we are done weeding, September looks like the perfect time to plant some natives and get this place humming!
The first date for making Evan’s Pass native again is Saturday 22nd July 10am – 2pm. Sign up is by emailing Sasha Goburdhone at [email protected] but get in quick as there are only 40 spaces!
