As Wellington's population grows, so too will housing pressure. But this won't affect everyone equally. The greatest challenges will fall on lower-income renters, families with children, and larger or multi-generational households, especially from ethnic minority communities. 🏡

There is a real, significant and growing need for more social housing. Investing in social housing leads to a healthier population, and a greater opportunity for people to reach their full potential. 🌟

Read our 'Delivering Value' report to learn more about why it's crucial that we invest in social housing -https://www.tetoimahana.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/WEB-Housing-Report-2026.pdf

Last week, we took full advantage of the sunshine ☀️ and organised a little community barbeque at 114 The Terrace. 114 is a temporary home for many of our tenants whose complexes are undergoing works as part of Wellington City Council's Housing Upgrade Programme phase 2 (HUP2). HUP2 will deliver warm, dry, safe and secure social housing that better meets the needs of future and current tenants. Our kaimahi had lovely yarns with our tenants, many of whom are loving inner-city living, and we're looking forward to building on the community spirit with more events (and sausage sizzles)!

To our tenants, a huge welcome to 114 The Terrace! 💓

Community Housing Aotearoa - CHA have just published their latest Insight Report, casting an important spotlight on the sobering reality of homelessness and housing in Aotearoa. Read it here: https://chahub.org.nz/api/qr/113

Among the findings the report backs the call that many of us in the housing sector have consistently made: to properly address homelessness, social housing in Aotearoa must be rapidly expanded.

As our recently published report 'Delivering Value: The Economic Benefits of Social Housing' shows, social housing is not a cost to our society: it is a critical investment that offers a broadly threefold return on investment. You can also read our report on our website: tetoimahana.org.nz/report. Thank you CHA for this critical piece of work!

Over the weekend, BGI (Wellington Boys' and Girls' Institute) organised a Youth Week event at Berkeley Dallard, to celebrate the young people in our homes and inviting the wider community that has helped to nurture them! We hope everyone who attended enjoyed the kai and sports games - thank you to BGI and to everyone who helped out! 🛝

Calling all Te Toi Mahana tenants! 📢 Our annual tenant satisfaction survey is now open for your feedback. Like last year, we have engaged Allen + Clarke (an independent research and consulting company) to conduct the survey. This year you have two options:

1. A short survey that would take less than 3 minutes.
2. Or if you prefer to provide more detail of your tenancy experience, a longer survey that would take less than 10 minutes.

By sharing your feedback, you’ll help improve our services to you and your whānau. Feedback through the survey is welcome until 12pm 15th June 2026. Fill out the online survey: https://allenandclarke.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3qIcAYKXyQKA0hU?Q_CHL=qr

Thank you to everyone who rocked up to our sausage sizzle to fundraise for Kaibosh over the weekend! 🌭 It was lovely to meet and have good yarns with the Crofton Downs community. The final day to contribute to our fundraiser is this Friday (29 May), so if you are able to, drop some coins into our Kaibosh fundraiser page this week! https://donorbox.org/ttmrunningfor-kaibosh-donation-2

Last Tuesday, we marked an important moment for Te Toi Mahana, with the Parliamentary launch of our report Delivering Value: The Economic Impact of Social Housing. A big mihi to all who joined us: thank you for supporting social housing, and for helping to create more affordable homes, stronger communities, and improved wellbeing for everyone in Pōneke. You can now read the full report on our website:https://www.tetoimahana.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/WEB-Housing-Report-2026.pdf and view a short video of the launch event below. 👇

Special shout out to our tenants, our host Julie-Anne Genter, speakers Tama Potaka, Andrew Little, Liz Kelly and Nate Rowe, and our research partners Allen+Clarke, Kāinga Maha and Sense Partners.

Crofton Downs, we're excited for our first new build to be in your neighbourhood, providing much-needed warm, dry and energy-efficient new homes. This Saturday, we're coming to the Crofton Downs Mitre 10 from 12:30- 3pm to run a sausage sizzle, with all proceeds going to Kaibosh Food Rescue. Drop by to meet some of the team and have a chat about our new build, how we work and any questions you might have. Or just grab a quick sausage (veggie options available!) while you shop and know the proceeds are going to one of the most valuable charities around, keeping people supported during this cost of living crisis.

Can't make it but still want to support the kaupapa? Donate here: https://donorbox.org/ttmrunningfor-kaibosh-donation-2

Just before we cleared the site for our new development on Lyndhurst Road, Tawa, we provided access to one of our vacant residential properties to Tawa Fire and Emergency NZ for specialist training exercises. Said Matt Serle, our Land and Construction Manager, "These types of real-world training opportunities are not always easy to come by, so it’s great to be able to partner with FENZ and support the important work they do preparing their teams for a wide range of emergency scenarios. We value the opportunity to work alongside organisations that help keep our communities safe and resilient, and we’re pleased the property could be put to good use before redevelopment." Thank you FENZ!
