MAG GRID: MAY PEST TOTAL = x181

For those who follow our mahi, you'll notice a significant drop in possum numbers on the MAG landowner grid last month. There are a few reasons for that:

1️⃣ With winter setting in, we have fewer daylight hours available for checking traps.

2️⃣ Due to cost/funding, we weren't able to undertake pulse baiting last month, which has led to higher rat numbers than usual. Rats also consume a lot of the lure from possum traps, meaning the bait doesn't last as long in the field and means we need to check traps far more regularly.

3️⃣ The really good news is that our NZ AutoTraps are helping slow reinvasion from the reserve above us. We're steadily reducing possum numbers across the area, which is exactly what we want to see. (The birdlife is bouncing back on the forest edges).

Every possum, rat, cat, pig, mustelid and hedgehog removed means a safer environment for our native wildlife and forests.

Thanks to everyone who continues to support the project and put in the hard yards on the ground all over Haakarimata. We'll start sharing range wide stats soon, great to see more landowners on trapnz recently!

Traps we use are from: NZ AutoTraps Envirotools Connovation

Some traps sponsored by Swampfrog Environmental & Tree Consultants, Transpower NZ, Waikato District Council, Waikato Regional Council and Department of Conservation

Get the kids out into nature and help them appreciate it from a young age.
Teach them the importance of planting a tree, setting a trap, and caring for the environment around them. These small experiences can spark a lifelong connection with the natural world and show them that they can make a real difference.

Nature is incredible and the more time our tamariki spend exploring, learning, and helping to protect it, the more they'll understand why it's worth looking after for future generations. 🌿🦜🌳
