We just wrapped up our financial review, and the honest truth is that we spent more than we received last year. Don't worry—the account isn't overdrawn! But we did dip so deep into our savings that we found some loose change from 1986 and a half-eaten mint…. Seen a roaming dog? Report it to Council.

If you come across a roaming dog, please contact Council as soon as possible rather than only posting about it on social media.

While community pages can help spread awareness, they are not official reports and may not be seen by Council's Animal Control team. If we don't know about the dog, we can't respond or investigate.

By reporting a roaming dog directly to Council, you help us:
• Respond more quickly.
• Help reunite lost dogs with their owners.
• Investigate repeat roaming issues.
• Keep our community and pets safe.

When making a report, please provide as much information as you can, including:
📍 The location.
🕒 The time the dog was seen.
🐶 A description of the dog (breed, colour, size, collar, etc.).
📷 A photo, if it is safe to take one.

Join our team - Animal Control Officer🐾

We are seeking an enthusiastic person with a commitment and passion in animal control, welfare and enforcement.

You will be responsible for all animal control functions and ensure they are carried out as per the provisions of the Dog Control Act 1996 and the Impounding Act 1955.

You will have excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to negotiate effectively in a collaborative and constructive manner in order to achieve co-operation and compliance. You will also have the ability to think on your feet and resolve situations when they arise.

Commitment to providing excellent customer service and the ability to work effectively on your own and within a team are a must.

An affinity with animals is important, along with the resilience to work through situations that can be confronting or emotionally difficult.

The position also requires rostered work over weekends to support our pound operations.

🚨 IMPORTANT BIOSECURITY UPDATE: Bird flu detected in New Zealand 🚨

You may have seen in the news that New Zealand's first case of H5N1 bird flu was recently confirmed in a wild seabird on a Wellington beach. While there are no reported cases in the Waitomo District, we want our community to stay vigilant and know what to look for.

The risk to human health remains very low, but we need your eyes on the ground to protect our local wildlife and backyard poultry.

👇 What you need to do:
• Do not touch: If you find dead or sick birds, do not handle, move, or touch them.
• Keep dogs on leads: Keep your pets well away from any bird carcasses, especially around our coastal areas and rivers.
• Know the threshold: Report any sightings of three or more dead or sick wild birds found together in the same area.
• Report immediately: Call the Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

Refer to factsheet for more detail if required.

How you can help investigators:
If it is safe to do so, take clear photos or videos of the birds from a distance. Note the exact location (or drop a GPS pin on your phone) to help Biosecurity New Zealand track the situation.

UPDATE: the horse has been returned to its owner. Big thanks to everyone for your help!

We have been notified that a horse has been found roaming this morning, by a walker. It has a rope attached, but looks like it may have broken free.

It has now been tied up to the basketball hoop on Eketone street, Te Kuiti.

Please help us find the owner by sharing this post.
