Thirty-nine new affordable homes have officially opened in Flaxmere, Hastings

We’re pleased to share the official opening of Te Pā Harakeke, a Hastings District Council-led development of 39 affordable homes in Flaxmere, Hastings.

The new one- and two-bedroom homes will help meet strong demand for smaller, affordable housing options in the community, particularly for older residents.

This development reflects strong local leadership and partnership and supports the wider vision for Flaxmere as a thriving, inclusive community where people have access to quality, affordable housing.

Going for Housing Growth is a multi-year programme to free up land, improve infrastructure funding, and incentivise councils to support new housing.

From 1 July, this work continues under the new Ministry for Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport (MCERT).

Decisions on development levies, land supply, and council incentives are still rolling out — and there's more to come.

In November 2025 we welcomed two interns through the Tupu Tai Pasifika Public Sector Internship Programme. Jett Fa'amalepe and Iosefa Ulugia-Pua spent the past few months with our Māori housing policy team, contributing directly to research that will inform future mahi.

Jett and Iosefa wrapped up their internships last week, completing substantial pieces of research that deepen our understanding of Māori experiences in the housing system. Their work will help inform content for our upcoming briefing to the incoming minister (BIM) and contribute to wider policy thinking across the organisation.
