Tēnā tātau,

First off, huge congrats to those who’ve clinched a seat at the council table! I’m stoked for you all and I’m sure you’ll do us proud. Especially stoked for our Māori ward reps. You’ve got this!

As for me, I’ve landed at a very respectable 12th place. That means no council seat for me this time around but im less tied to the result and more thank ful for the journey, and I’ve loved every minute of it ... well most of it😳 Honestly, it’s been like a really long, slightly nerve wracking, but super enlightening road trip … and I didn’t even have to pack any Kina.

To everyone who threw their hat in the ring, whether you made it or not, big mihi to you. It takes a lot of heart to put yourself out there, and to me, that’s a win. So, hats off to you all for loving our community enough to give it a shot.

Ngā mihi nui, and here’s to the next adventure!

As we start pulling down the political hoardings (why are they called hoardings??) I’ve reflected on the last few weeks. This whole time has been consumed with the job of making it into council. The task at hand is to run a good campaign in an effort to gain entry to the decision making table for this little place we call home. But it’s not lost on me that this is only half the job. Should I be successful in my pursuits, that is when the rubber hits the road and the real work and journey begins. It is 3 years of hard work, constant critique and from what I hear, a decent amount of vitriol from misinformed members of the public. More importantly though, in my humble opinion, it is about service. But that is a story for after this weekend …

šŸ•Šļø Peace through unity.
Today, in one of my governance roles, we had some powerful kōrero about how real peace isn’t just the absence of noise, conflict or chaos. It’s being able to hold calm in the middle of it all.

We talked about how words can spark change, how conversation can be the bridge, and how even tragedy can teach us the deepest lessons about peace.

It reminded me of a quote someone once shared with me:

ā€œPeace doesn’t mean to be in a place where there is no noise or trouble. It means to be amidst all of the chaos and still remain at peace within yourself.ā€

Robust debate is vital for a healthy democracy, and like Hayden Potaka, I am committed to bringing it to the council chambers.

But there’s one thing we can agree on… my undisputed prowess on the squash court. šŸ†šŸ˜‚

Thanks for the game, bro. Let’s keep the energy up on and off the court for Whanganui, for the people, with future-focused decision-making.
