A Seat at the Table for All
It is encouraging to see the Mayoral Inner City Task Force move from planning to action. WhangÄreiâs prosperity relies on collective effort and unified commitment.
However, given the community-led nature of this initiative, there appears to be a significant communication gap. Some agencies with valuable, on-the-ground experience and a willingness to contribute were unaware that this meeting was scheduled. If the underlying principle is that âno single organization can address these issues alone,â it is essential that all willing parties are included. Moving forward, the task force should ensure that diverse voices, including grassroots organizations that have already expressed interest in participating, are actively engaged to facilitate meaningful progress. We have emailed you and with no response.
On Wednesday we held the first meeting of the Mayoral Inner City Task Force, bringing together government agencies, businesses, hapĆ« and community organisations who all have a role to play in the prosperity of WhangÄreiâs city centre.
Council is facilitating the task force, but this is a communityâled effort. The people who live, work and run businesses in the city centre need to be part of shaping how it improves.
The focus is straightforward. We want a city centre that feels safe, looks good and thrives socially and economically.
Police, government agencies, health and social services, business representatives and Council are now working together on practical workstreams. These will run alongside the work already underway across agencies and organisations in the city centre, helping bring those efforts together and move them forward.
No single organisation can solve these issues alone, but working together gives us a much better chance of making real progress.
Weâll continue to share updates as the work develops.
Thank you to the team at Roost for hosting the first meeting. Future meetings will rotate around different hospitality venues in the city centre.
