"Improved resourcing for island biodiversity conservation and monitoring in the Pacific is very important as our islands are scattered and isolated. We are custodians of the largest span of ocean in the world, so it is important for the wider global community to help us in the conservation management and monitoring of Pacific biodiversity through more resourcing.

Papua New Guinea hosts about 8% of the worldโ€™s biodiversity and is referenced as one of the megadiverse nations, however we get very little support from the global community.

Regardless of whether we are from Fiji, Samoa, Papua New Guinea or other, we are the Pacific and we must work in a unified approach to get more resourcing for biodiversity from the global community.

Seeking improved resourcing is also a good opportunity for us to build the capacity of our village communities to manage their initiatives because for too long we have denied them that opportunity to manage resourcing. They are better placed than us to know the situation on the ground, even though we are all from island communities, some may not live in the village. What we think is best in the urban areas is not necessarily whatโ€™s most effective for our village communities. For this reason, while we support them by seeking resources for their activities, we must build their capacity so they may take ownership and lead the way, this is how we achieve sustainability."

CEPA Officers Gain Cutting-Edge Skills in ArcGIS Pro with USAID LGP Support

Port Moresby, 22 October 2024 โ€“ Seven officers from the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) have successfully completed an intensive virtual training on ArcGIS Pro, thanks to support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) LGP project.

The training was delivered virtually over a series of 3 weeks by experts from Esri Australia, with the support of USAID LGP, who have purchased the ARCGIS Pro 3 year license for CEPA. The training will empower CEPA officers with advanced skills to improve geospatial data management and strengthen environmental monitoring efforts.

The program covered essential workflows, from project creation and data management to symbolization and spatial analysis. Participants also explored real-time data collection, web mapping, and fieldwork survey configuration, and usage of web based apps such as ARCGIS Field Maps, Survey123 and Quickcapture, equipping them with practical tools to elevate CEPA's conservation work.

This initiative is a result of the strong collaboration between CEPA, USAID, and Esri Australia to harness innovative geospatial technology for sustainable resource management in Papua New Guinea.

CEPA Leads Successful Conservation Missions in Komia and Baiyer Lumusa

Upper Mendi, 10 October 2024

The Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) of Papua New Guinea has successfully completed two critical community consultation missions in the Southern Highlands and Western Highlands regions. These missions are part of CEPAโ€™s ongoing efforts to promote environmental conservation and sustainable development across the country, in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The first mission was carried out in Komia Village, Upper Mendi LLG**, where CEPA's team engaged in in-depth discussions with community members from Ward Councils 1 and 2. The consultations centered around the establishment of the **Mt. Giluwe Community Conservation Area (CCA)**, focusing on aligning local conservation efforts with national and global environmental goals under the GEF-supported initiatives. This engagement is expected to lay a strong foundation for long-term conservation activities in the region, promoting resilience and sustainable resource management.

The second mission took place in Baiyer Lumusa, where CEPA officials, despite facing weather-related challenges, met with the community at Metai Village to discuss the creation of the **Oimbo Community Conservation Area (CCA). The team worked closely with provincial authorities and local leaders to identify key conservation priorities and ensure that community-driven solutions are at the forefront of the natural resource management strategy for the region.

Additionally, during the visit to Baiyer Lumusa,CEPA representatives also visited the Baiyer River Wildlife Sanctuary and the Jimi (Ruti) Valley National Parkโ€”two established conservation areas that are currently managed by CEPA. These visits were instrumental in assessing the ongoing success of these protected areas and reaffirming CEPA's commitment to safeguarding Papua New Guinea's rich biodiversity.

These missions highlight CEPA's proactive role in environmental stewardship, ensuring that conservation efforts are community-centered and aligned with international standards for biodiversity protection. Through continued collaboration with local stakeholders, CEPA is fostering sustainable livelihoods while protecting the nation's natural heritage. This is inline with the global CBD 30x30 target, which seeks to conserve at least 30% of PNG by 2030.

CEPA Leads Community Land Use Planning Workshops in Sohe District

Kokoda, Papua New Guinea โ€“ The Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA), through its Terrestrial Protected Areas Branch, has successfully facilitated a series of workshops aimed at developing Community Land Use Action Plans for two villages in the Kokoda Rural Local Level Government (LLG), Sohe District, Northern Province. Over two weeks, CEPA led four-day workshops focused on empowering local communities to sustainably manage their land resources.

In collaboration with the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), CEPA utilized a participatory land use planning approach to guide participants. Community members identified key land uses, including cash crop areas, and formulated strategies to manage these resources for both current and future needs.

The Community Land Use Action Plans will serve as foundational tools for these villages to create ward plans and draft proposals for funding support from government, donor partners, and non-governmental organizations, ensuring sustainable development and resource management.
