The Global Green Growth Institute - GGGI is seeking a motivated intern to join our Papua New Guinea Country Office in Port Moresby. This internship offers a unique opportunity to provide operational support to our Climate Finance Access, Absorption and Implementation team.

In this role, you will assist with primary and secondary data collection, help prepare technical briefs and presentations, and support the coordination of internal and external meetings with key government and stakeholder partners, contributing to the delivery of GGGI’s climate finance services in the country.

Requirements: Candidates must be Papua New Guinea Nationals or hold a valid work permit to work in PNG, should be currently enrolled in (or a recent graduate within the last 12 months of), have a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field. Applicants should possess a strong command of MS Word and Excel, access to a personal laptop, and a deep interest in the climate change area of work.

✨1 out 6; Key Outcomes and Achievements from the Green Finance Summit 2026

AFD - Agence Française de Développement, Bank of Papua New Guinea and GGGI Papua New Guinea signed a Letter of Intent to Accelerate Green Lending for SMEs in PNG 🌱

AFD is pursuing an additional financing of EUR 15 Million to support the Green Finance Facility, subject to appropriate approvals.

This will strengthen the implementation of the Papua New Guinea’s Inclusive Green Finance Taxonomy and help unlock sustainable financing opportunities for businesses and communities across the country.

The collaboration will further support the Green Finance Centre Papua New Guinea in developing a pipeline of green investments, mobilizing additional climate finance, and strengthening the Green Refinancing Facility and Green Guarantee Facility, ensuring climate finance reaches SMEs, rural communities, and women-led enterprises - focusing on biodiversity projects + building resilience and inclusive growth across PNG.

Advancing renewable energy for Solomon Islands!

The Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification (MMERE), in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute - GGGI recently convened key stakeholders in Honiara to advance discussions on the proposed Solomon Islands Renewable Energy Fund (SIRE Fund).

Bringing together government agencies, development partners, financial institutions, and the private sector, the consultations explored sustainable financing solutions to expand renewable energy access especially for rural and remote communities, where less than 10% currently have adequate electricity access.

The SIRE Fund aims to establish a coordinated financing mechanism that promotes long-term sustainability, community ownership, and private sector engagement—key pillars in accelerating Solomon Islands’ renewable energy transition.

🌍GGGI PNG Meets EU Delegation to Strengthen Climate and Development Cooperation 🇬🇧🤝🇵🇬

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) PNG Country Representative for Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu Muhammad Ali Shaikh, accompanied by GGGI PNG Communications and Knowledge Sharing Associate, Lorraine Basse, held a productive meeting with the European Union Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, H.E. Ms. Erika Hasznos, and Investment Officer, Mr. Marton Keri, to further strengthen cooperation and explore new opportunities to advance shared priorities in climate action, sustainable development, and investment.

Discussions underscored the strong alignment between the European Union’s Global Gateway investment strategy and GGGI’s ongoing work in critical sectors including energy and water. Both parties expressed strong interest in deepening collaboration in the energy sector, while also exploring opportunities in digital innovation and health-related solutions that can support long-term sustainable growth in Papua New Guinea.

⚡ Powering a greener future for Papua New Guinea

The National Energy Authority (NEA) and GGGI have signed a new partnership to support renewable energy development across PNG. This cooperation has been made possible thanks to the Papua New Guinea - Australia Partnership’s Climate FIRST initiative.

The signing ceremony took place as a side event during the Sixth Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers’ Meeting from 4th – 8th May which brought together Pacific ministers and senior officials responsible for energy and maritime transport to accelerate practical solutions that keep pacific islands connected by sea and by clean, reliable energy.

This collaboration will help:
✅ Bring more renewable energy projects to life
✅ Expand electricity access to remote communities
✅ Attract climate finance investments
✅ Strengthen the country’s energy systems

Mr. Ronald Meketa, Managing Director of the National Energy Authority: “This MoU marks an important step forward in strengthening PNG’s energy sector. By working with GGGI, we are positioning the country to get an outcome that will benefit the communities that we serve.”

🌿 Strengthening roads for a more resilient Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬🌱

From 5–6 May 2026, the Department of Works and Highways (DoWH), together with Global Green Growth Institute - GGGI Papua New Guinea, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), hosted a National Awareness Workshop on Climate-Resilient Road Infrastructure in Port Moresby.

👷‍♂️The workshop brought together participants from across the government, the private sector, development partners and the media to learn about:
✅ Climate-resilient road standards
✅ Climate risk assessment tools
✅ Better road planning and maintenance
✅ Stronger partnerships for future infrastructure investment

“The road network is the backbone of national unity, economic growth and service delivery and resilient infrastructure is essential to unlock opportunities across provinces.” Mr. Gibson Holemba, Secretary for the Department of Works and Highways.

🌿 Building stronger roads for a more resilient Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬🌱

From 30th April – 01st May 2026, the Department of Works and Highways, together with GGGI, hosted a two-day technical training workshop on Climate-Responsive Road Infrastructure Integrated Guidelines and Implementation Framework in Port Moresby.

The workshop brought together 40 engineers, technical officers and stakeholders from across Papua New Guinea to strengthen skills in climate-responsive road planning, design and maintenance.

✅ New climate-responsive road guidelines
✅ Climate risk and vulnerability assessments
✅ Nature-based solutions
✅ Gender and social inclusion in infrastructure
✅ Practical steps for nationwide implementation

“This training formed an important part of our capacity-building efforts to strengthen the potential of young engineers in the department. Engineers are encouraged to study the five manuals and taking ownership of their learning by facilitating training sessions for their colleagues. This approach not only deepened their understanding but also enhance their leadership in climate resilient infrastructure.” Mr. Kenneth Yamu, DoWH Assistant Secretary for the Environment and Social Safeguards Branch.

“Looking ahead, this is a practical step towards stronger, more resilient road infrastructure in Papua New Guinea. Success will mean that climate risk becomes a routing part of decision-making within DoWH. Delivered through the IRIS PNG Project, the workshop helped ensure Papua New Guinea’s roads are better prepared for the impacts of climate change while supporting safer and more sustainable transport systems for communities across the country.
