The National Airports Corporation (NAC) advises the traveling public and stakeholders that the Asphalt Overlay and Associated works at Mt. Hagen (Kagamuga) Airport are scheduled to commence this Thursday, 04th June 2026 and will take approximately 9 months to complete, weather permitting.

These essential works are necessary to ensure that the A220 / B737 operates into Mt. Hagen (Kagamuga) Airport by December 2026.

The upgrade of the runway to asphalt concrete overlay, is among the top priorities driven by the NAC Board to create sustainable airports that meet the growing demand for air travel in the country while supporting economic growth.

NAC Acting Managing Director and CEO, Dominic Kaumu said that the works will be implemented in accordance with the required standards whilst ensuring that the safety and security of operations at the airport during the period of works, are maintained.

The work will be carried out on the central (18m) portion of the runway including turning nodes and taxi way B and will consist of the following;

* Asphalt Overlay and Runway Grooving;
* Application of new Pavement Markings;

Associated works will include Aircraft Parking Bays and Drainage Improvements.

The upgrading of the Mt Hagen Airport will be carried out in 13 stages, under an approved Method of Work Plan (MOWP).

NAC is committed to do its utmost best to ensure that the full runway length will be made available for B737 and A220 aircraft operations by December 2026.

We apologize for any inconvenience that will be caused during this period and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work together with all key stakeholders to complete this important project at Mt. Hagen (Kagamuga) airport.

The National Airports Corporation (NAC) advises that the Wewak Airport runway has been reopened to fixed-wing aircraft operations as of yesterday afternoon, Saturday, 30th May 2026, following temporary closure yesterday morning due to pavement swelling caused by heavy rain.

Inspections by our airport safety team yesterday afternoon had confirmed improved surface conditions, and the runway was confirmed safe for operations.

The Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued earlier yesterday morning to temporarily close the runway, was also cancelled.

We thank all passengers, airlines, and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation.

The National Airports Corporation would like to advise the traveling public and all stakeholders that Wewak Airport runway has been temporarily closed as of 8am this morning (Saturday 30th May, 2026) to fixed-wing aircraft operations, due to pavement swelling caused by heavy rain.

During a routine inspection earlier this morning, NACโ€™s airport safety personnel, identified bulging along critical sections of the runway, rendering it unsafe for aircraft landings and take-offs. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued for the temporary runway closure, until further notice.

NAC's Safety team are closely monitoring the situation, and updates will be provided as conditions improve.

The runway will be reassessed later today, and the NOTAM will be either extended or lifted based on safety advice.

We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all passengers, airlines, and stakeholders as we work to ensure safe operations at Wewak Airport.

Today we facilitated and witnessed the formal ceremony for the repatriation of the remains of fallen US soldiers at the APEC Terminal in Port Moresby.

Representatives of the United States Military, the U.S. Embassy, the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF), and the National Airports Corporation (NAC) gathered in reverence to honor this historic moment of remembrance.

To date, 307 remains have been identified through the Dรฉfense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). The remains will be transferred to Hawaii, where they will undergo examination at a state of the art forensic laboratory, staffed by more than 40 anthropologists.

Specialists will take small samples and send them to a DNA investigation lab, where DNA is extracted and matched against family reference samples voluntarily donated by relatives. Once confirmed, families are formally notified, ensuring closure and recognition of their loved oneโ€™s sacrifice.

Nine U.S. Military personnel from the DPAA, alongside, PNGDF representatives, and the media team, took part in todayโ€™s ceremony. Their presence reflects the enduring partnership between Papua New Guinea and the United States in honouring the sacrifices of service members.

The war remains will be on their final journey home on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, before being reunited with families and laid to rest in their final resting place.

The National Airports Corporation (NAC) advises that the runway at Goroka Airport in the Eastern Highlands Province is now re-opened and safe for normal operations as of 9:30am this morning.

This follows inspections and rectification by PNG Air engineers and removal of the disabled Aircraft from the runway.

NAC temporarily closed the runway yesterday morning when PNG Airโ€™s ATR Aircraft became disabled on the runway after its tyres burst as it was attempting to take off, rendering the runway unsafe for aircraft operations.

NAC thanks the traveling public for your patience and understanding during the temporary runway closure and we also acknowledge the cooperation of PNG Air Management and staff and all stakeholders in clearing the runway.

We assure the traveling public, airline partners, and business community that safety remains our highest priority.
