We welcomed the UN Special Representative on Violence Against Children, Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid, during her visit to country this week.

Minister Hon. Jason Peter, Secretary for Community Development Department Mr Jerry Ubase, NOFCS Acting Director Mr Jerry Wap and representatives of key partners and agencies met with Dr. Najat, to discuss how we can work together to build a safer and a stronger future for our children.

Minister Peter emphasized that as PNG approaches its 50th year of independence, now is the time to invest in lasting child protection systems.

“The challenges are real, but we must work together to strengthen the services that protect our children,” he said.

Dr. Najat reflect the Minister’s call for stronger coordination and accountability, urging the country to clearly define roles across sectors, improve cooperation, and increase resources for child protection.

She also advocated for the integration of child protection into the national development plan, noting the heavy social and economic cost of inaction.

We are committed to ensuring child protection is a national priority, not just within government, but across communities.

Together with our partners, we aim to create a coordinated, well-resourced system that places the safety and wellbeing of every child at its core.

With 75% of PNG’s children experiencing violence.

Violence against children is not normal, and it must not be accepted.

Last week Friday, we concluded a week-long awareness program led by Joint Taskforce Committee on Street Children in NCD and Motukoitabu Villages focused on Street children issues. This is aligned with the recently launched Street Children Response Strategy.

The Joint Taskforce Committee is composed of Education Department, NCDC, Police, and other key partners.

During the awareness , officers were placed at various strategic locations conducting awareness and sharing key messages. Important provisions under Lukautim Pikinini Act was also highlighted to the public especially in regards to Child’s welfare and protection.

At the closing event, Acting Director Mr Jerry Wap thanked partners and individuals who involved in the successful roll-out of the program.

In the next phase, we are looking forward to sustaining and properly dealing with the issue, that is by establishing a processing centre in partnership with NCDC first so that every street children is captured, properly assessed and processed.

This program will be replicated in other regional centres.

Early this year, we identified 235 Street children in NCD. After prossessing them, only 5 of them were genuine Street children while others had a parent or both. We put the five in out-of-home care centre and sent the others to their families.

We will not stop, but will continue the work to ensure every child in this country has the basic right to be free and protected.

Child’s welfare is everyone's responsibility. Let's protect our future by protecting our children.

This week, over 66 officers from different organisations are conducting awareness at key locations in NCD and Motukoitabu Villages.

The participating organisations are National Office for Child and Family Services, NCDC, Police, Education Department, and the Department for Community Development and Religion.

We thank the dedicated officers for their commitment in conducting this week-long public awareness initiative spearheaded by the National Joint Taskforce Team.

We are into the third stage of this first yet massive public awareness program with the hope of addressing the issue of Street kids.

The issue is huge. And we urge everyone, including parents, to take the responsibility. Let's ensure no kid is on the streets. Let's work together and shape the future of this nation.

Since Tuesday, 25 March, we joined other Ministerial Agencies at the National Youth Resource Week, interacting with the youths in NCD.

Today, we were privileged to have the Minister Hon. Jason Peter casually visiting our Stalls, observing how our officers were conversing with the participating youths.

Our officers told the enthusiastic youths about the functions of the office and the available pathways.

Whilst taking note of their concerns and intersts, they were also reminded of the responsibility to protect the rights of children - may it be their younger siblings or any other children.

We are working in partnership with sister agencies and other key partners to ensure the the children below the age of 18 and potential youths are empowered. We look forward to continue tomorrow until official close up on Saturday 29 March.

Together, for better PNG.

Following the recent National Street Children Response Joint Taskforce exercise conducted in NCD, we safely integrated four (4) Street children into a care home.

Of the 235 Street children identified through the Taskforce exercise, 73 of them were out of school. We also processed them and they will continue their education within Port Moresby.

The success is made possible through the collective efforts of our key partners, including the Department of Education, NCDC, the Royal PNG Constabulary, our Development partners and we thank them for the support.

Together, we are looking forward to replicating this exercise in other urban centres across PNG to further protect vulnerable children and uphold their rights.
