At Pacific talks in Suva, PNG’s finance representative raised how fuel supply and transport costs affect freight, business, services, and remote island communities.

The discussion focused on practical ways Pacific countries can work together to keep transport, trade, and local economies moving.

PNG also pointed to the challenge faced by scattered island communities, where long travel and fuel costs affect daily life.

PNG received a record K852 million corporate tax payment from Lihir Gold Limited.

The payment was made to the Internal Revenue Commission as a first instalment corporate tax payment.

The report says it is one of the largest corporate tax cheques in PNG mining history.

June 2026. IMF approves new funding for Papua New Guinea.

The International Monetary Fund approved new funding for PNG through completed programme reviews.

PNG will get immediate access to about US$82 million under the EFF and ECF arrangements. Kina conversion not provided.

Another about US$81 million is available under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility. Kina conversion not provided.

The IMF said PNG met all quantitative performance criteria and all indicative targets for the review periods.

This matters because approved funding and met targets support stronger public finance, economic stability, and national confidence.

The Hoskins Airport Upgrade Project in West New Britain Province is now 57 percent complete.

The National Airports Corporation says airside and landside works are moving forward.

MOWP Stages 1 to 7 have been completed, while Stage 8 is scheduled to continue under approval requirements.

During Stage 8, the available runway length is 1,090 metres, with larger aircraft expected to return as works progress.

June 2026. 9 Mile clinic strengthens safe health care.

WaterAid Papua New Guinea and the National Capital District Provincial Health Authority completed a three day WaSH training at 9 Mile Urban Clinic.

Clinic staff, nurses, community health workers, cleaners, volunteers, and support clinicians took part.

The training covered six WASH FIT modules to improve water supply, sanitation, cleaning, and medical waste safety.

June 2026. Education support reaches millions of PNG students.

Official figures show 2,565,713 students across PNG have been enrolled in subsidised schooling.

The Government Tuition Fee Subsidy reached K4.6 billion over the review period, including K1.01 billion in 2025.

The Higher Education Loan Programme also supported 53,958 tertiary students, with K284.7 million disbursed.

This matters because school fees are one of the biggest barriers for families, and education builds PNG’s future workforce.
