Chairman Wavik holds up the King's baton at Hanuabada village signifying the stance in Unity and participation in the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Baton arrived at the Golden village, with much anticipation and celebration from Villagers, sporting legends and athletes, and most importantly children who eagerly followed the baton with much glee and excitement.

The big village was selected for its reputation for producing outstanding athletes in different sporting codes.

East New Britain was the other province the Baton visited before setting off to its next destination.

'The baton is currently on a 500-day journey across all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories. The journey, which began at Buckingham Palace on March 10, 2025, will conclude on July 23, 2026, when all 74 decorated batons are reunited in Glasgow'.

Chairman Wavik Leads Bold Push to End Homebrew in Hanuabada

In a breakthrough move and for the first time in years, more than ten homebrew producers in Hanuabada have voluntarily surrendered their distillation equipment, signalling a new chapter for the Motu-Koitabu people and marking a symbolic step toward ending one of the most widespread social issues affecting Hanuabada.

The surrender exercise preceded a small operation spearheaded by the Chairman of Motu – Koitabu Assembly (MKA) Russel S. Wavik to address the rampant selling of illicit homebrew and illegal display of alcohol at the Hanuabada roadside market.

For decades, the community’s reputation as one of Papua New Guinea’s most peaceful and law-abiding groups has been overshadowed by production and sales of illicit homebrew, locally known as faiya-wara. The trade has fuelled social issues and tarnished the image of the Motu-Koitabu, particularly in Hanuabada, which has long been regarded as the epicentre of homebrew production.

Chairman Wavik who personally addressed the producers and sellers at the village said it was now time for the people of the Motu – Koitabu to regain their standing and engage in other alternative activities.

He stated that while he is aware of the hardship and challenges that has driven villagers to turn to such activities as homebrew production and illegal sales of alcohol, the MKA is now working tirelessly to establish sustainable strategies including community and social engagement activities to substitute for these illicit exercises.

“We must respect the law and rebuild our community’s reputation. Sustainable strategies, including employment opportunities and social engagement, will help families move away from this destructive trade,” he said.

First volunteer homebrew producer to surrender, 53 year old Nou Ruma said he had been producing and selling homebrew to cater for basic needs for his family – and although he had tried to engage in other small business activities, he found that homebrew sales was the easiest and fastest income generator.

However, he stated that, the initiative taken by the Chairman to personally address them at a village level had convinced him that they (villagers) will be offered sustainable strategies to counter for the illegal exercise of production and sale of homebrew.

First order of Business for Newly elected Chairman of Motu Koitabu and Deputy Governor of NCD.

Eastablishment of a lands secretariat for the Motu Koitabu office to identify appropriate procedures to ensure that land grabbing is a thing of the past, is the first order of business for the newly elected Chairman and Deputy Governor of NCD Mr. Russel Simon Wavik.

This was revealed in a small but signficant swearing-in ceremony for the Chairman, councils and women representatives of MKA, officiated by Senior Magistrate Garry Unjo.

Chairman Wavik said he has being a silent advocate for land issues, advocating against customary land sales, especially in the area of Motu Koitabu - and has strongly advised against fellow motuans and koitabuan selling their lands.

He added that land issues was one of the key drivers that motivated him to relentlessly vie for the elections.

Mr.Wavik, a community leader who has persistently stood up for the people of Motu -Kotabu, said the people believed in him and chose him to be their voice and he will do everything in his power to ensure that the people are served.

Mr. Wavik acknowledged the outgoing Chairman and his regime for setting a precedence that will be progressed accordingly.

He said there is no division.

" I would like to acknowledge the outgoing Chairman and his regime, he has served the people accordingly and we will take it from there. There is no division, we are doing this for the people.

He further stated that despite not having a decorated CV, he has ate the same food, drank the same water and lived the life with the people, and he understands the struggles of Motuans and Koitabuans, and he will serve the people accordingly.
