🇵🇭 BSKE 2026 Postponement Measures Advance in Senate

A Senate panel has approved measures seeking to postpone the November 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) and establish a fixed five-year term for barangay and SK officials.

Senator Chiz Escudero said the proposal aims to provide greater stability and avoid repeated election postponements, while Senator Imee Marcos proposed moving the elections to October 2027, citing voter travel costs and the timing of the 2026 elections.

Meanwhile, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Erwin Garcia said Congress has the authority to determine the terms of barangay and SK officials and urged lawmakers to decide by September whether the 2026 BSKE will proceed.

Garcia also warned that postponing the elections could leave around ₱3 billion in sunk costs from the ₱8 billion already spent or obligated for preparations. However, some election materials, including approximately ₱2.4 billion worth of printed ballots, could still be used in future elections.

For young Aklanons and communities across Aklan, any changes to the BSKE timeline could directly affect local youth leadership and barangay governance. Stay informed as Congress continues deliberating on the proposed changes.
