Through this series, we shine a spotlight on LGBTQ+ individuals and allies whose journeys of perseverance and achievement inspire others to thrive as their authentic selves.

MX. WENDY BERTIZ BAROTILLA
Registered Social Worker โ€ข Founding President, Bacacay Pixie SAGA โ€ข LGBTQIA+ Rights Advocate

For our final Pride Feature, we celebrate a woman who transformed one painful moment into a lifetime of purpose.

Meet Wendy Bertiz Barotilla, whose story is a reminder that every movement begins with someone brave enough to ask, "Why should I have to choose between my identity and my dreams?"

While pursuing her Social Work degree, Wendy encountered a moment that would forever change the course of her life. Before she could enroll, she was told that she had to cut her hair.

To many, it may have sounded like a simple requirement. To Wendy, it questioned something far deeper. It questioned whether a transgender woman could be accepted in a profession built on dignity, compassion, and social justice while remaining true to herself.

She struggled to understand why authenticity had become a condition for education, and why conformity seemed more important than competence. But instead of surrendering, she chose to stand. She fought for her hair, but more importantly, she fought for her right to education. It was never about appearance. It was about affirming a simple truth: that professionalism is not determined by hair length, gender expression, or conformity to outdated expectations. It is reflected in competence, integrity, compassion, and service to others.

That single decision became the turning point of her life.

Years later, Wendy graduated from Bicol University, became a Registered Social Worker, served as the Gender and Development Focal Person of the Local Government Unit of Bacacay, and now serves under the Department of Social Welfare and Development as a Project Development Officer II under the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program.

Yet she knew that personal success alone was never enough.

She understood that if one transgender woman had to fight simply to enter a classroom, countless others were silently fighting the same battle. And driven by that realization, Wendy helped build something bigger than herself.

She became the founding President of Bacacay Pixie SAGA, creating a platform where LGBTQIA+ individuals could organize, find community, and advocate for dignity and equality. She also became a member of Gayon Albay LGBTQIA+ Organization, extending her advocacy beyond Bacacay and helping strengthen the movement across the province.

Looking back, Wendy believes that one conversation in 2018 became the foundation of every opportunity she has today. It taught her that one voice can challenge a policy, one act of courage can inspire a community, and one person's refusal to be silenced can open doors for many others.

But her story has never been about proving people wrong. It has always been about proving to every young LGBTQIA+ person that they belong. That they deserve to learn without hiding who they are. That they deserve to work without sacrificing their identity. That they deserve to dream without apologizing for their existence.

This Pride Month, Wendy shares this message:

Wendy's story reminds us that Pride is more than celebration. It is leadership that transforms personal struggles into collective victories. And above all, it is choosing to leave the path wider than you found it, so that those who come after you will never have to fight the same battles alone.

MX. JOSHUA BERMAS
Professional Make-up Artist โ€ข Beauty Pageant Handler

For our second Pride Feature, we highlight Mx. Joshua Bermas, a professional makeup artist whose story is rooted not only in artistry and perseverance, but in a quiet, unwavering love for family.

Joshua has been a makeup artist for 11 years, an unexpected path that began when he watched Jessie Bercilla, a trusted name in the makeup industry and someone he deeply admires, which inspired him to learn the craft himself. With guidance from fellow artists and years of dedication, he honed his skills and built a journey shaped by both passion and purpose.

Beyond makeup artistry, Joshua is also a beauty pageant handler, helping prepare and guide aspiring candidates who eventually grew into crowned queens.

What makes Joshuaโ€™s story remarkable is not just his success in the beauty industry, but the heart behind every step he has taken. Through his work, he was able to sustain himself through college and, more importantly, become a steady source of support for his family, especially his nieces and nephews, whom he continues to care for with deep responsibility and love. For Joshua, providing for his family was never about obligation, it became an expression of love. Every sacrifice, every long day of work, and every client he serves carries the same intention: to give his family a better chance at comfort, stability, and hope.

To LGBTQ+ individuals who carry similar responsibilities at home, Joshua reminds us that love for family is powerful, but it should never come at the cost of losing oneself. The desire to give should be guided not by pressure, but by what we are able to offer with care and balance.

This Pride Month, he reflects on a journey shaped by resilience and self-acceptance.

Joshuaโ€™s story is a reminder that success is not only measured by achievement, but also by the lives we help uplift, and the love we continue to give, even in silence, even in sacrifice.

Mx. JOHN BELEN
Graduating Student โ€ข Cum Laude โ€ข Future Educator โ€ข LGBTQ+ Advocate

At 22 years old, Mx. John Belen of Barangay 14, Bacacay, Albay, has already proven that success flourishes where acceptance exists.

A graduating Cum Laude student of the Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English at Bicol University College of Education, John's journey reflects the power of being seen, respected, and valued for who she truly is. In a learning environment that embraced diversity, she found the confidence to lead, participate, and pursue opportunities that shaped her into the educator and advocate she is becoming today.

For John, acceptance did more than make her feel included, it allowed her to realize that her identity was never a limitation. Instead, it became part of a story defined by perseverance, excellence, and purpose.

Beyond the classroom, John continues to make her mark as a rising beauty queen and an active member of Bacacay Pixie SAGA, using her voice to promote visibility and representation for the LGBTQ+ community.

As she prepares to enter the teaching profession, John carries with her a vision of creating learning spaces where every student feels safe, respected, and empowered to be themselves.

This Pride Month, Bacacay Pixie SAGA introduces Pride Feature - a series that puts the spotlight on LGBTQ+ individuals and allies in Bacacay, Albay whose stories reflect courage, excellence, and authenticity in their own fields and everyday lives.

Through these stories, we hope to challenge the idea that people can be boxed in or defined narrowly. Because no one is โ€œjustโ€ anything. Every LGBTQ person is complex, capable, and deserving of respect and space to simply be.

We tell these stories because silence has always been the loudest form of exclusion. And visibility is political, powerful, and necessary. So we invite you to read, listen, and see beyond labels. To meet people not for what they are called, but for who they are.

This is not celebration alone.
This is assertion. This is presence. This is demand for dignity.

This is Pride in every story. Happy Pride Month!

Truly, disability rights are human rights!

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2025 ๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿ•Š Theme: โ€œAccess to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergenciesโ€

In the face of calamities, itโ€™s not only our homes, roads, and crops that are damaged -- our hearts and minds often bear the deepest scars.

Bacacay has once again felt the weight of natureโ€™s wrath, the floods, the storms, the uncertainty that lingers long after the skies clear. Yet amidst these catastrophes, there lies an often unseen struggle: the quiet battles fought inside. Anxiety. Grief. Fatigue. Hopelessness. These, too, are emergencies -- and they deserve our response.

This World Mental Health Day reminds us that mental health care is not a luxury; it is a lifeline. In times of crisis, access to psychological support and compassionate spaces is as vital as food, water, and shelter. Recovery is not complete without healing the mind.

To our frontliners, families, and friends who continue to stand tall despite exhaustion - may today remind you that strength is not just endurance; itโ€™s also the courage to ask for help.

Together, letโ€™s stand for mental health for all, in every season --calm or catastrophe. ๐Ÿ’š

In celebration of this observance, and in coordination with the Sangguniang Bayan Committee on Human Rights, the Bacacay Gender and Development (GAD), through its former GAD Focal, Ms. Wendy Bertiz Barotilla, has proposed the passage of the Bacacay PWD Code - a comprehensive local policy that promotes inclusive employment, accessibility, and equal opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

May this ordinance be passed, implemented, and upheld with sincerity and strength - because true progress is measured not by how loud we speak of inclusion, but by how faithfully we practice it. ๐Ÿ’–โœจ

Behind every ordinance lobbied and every resolution pushed forward lies a deeper story: the voices of people who for too long have been unheard, the hopes of communities who dream of a Bacacay where equality is not an aspiration but a reality.

For Bacacay Gender and Development, policy advocacy is not just about paperwork or legislation. It is about turning lived experiences into protections, struggles into safeguards, and aspirations into lasting commitments that shape the way our municipality governs and cares.

These are the policies we have helped champion, each one a testament to our belief that true change begins when governance listens, responds, and acts.

This is our promise - to keep pushing, to keep building, and to keep standing for a Bacacay where everyone belongs. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

Bacacay Gender and Development, through our GADmader Wendy Bertiz Barotilla, had the honor of serving as Resource Person at the Childrenโ€™s Congress, tackling the essential topics of Inclusivity and Diversity.

When children learn to embrace differences, respect individuality, and celebrate uniqueness, they grow into leaders who uplift rather than divide, and who ensure that no one is left behind. As we shape the minds of the next generation, we are reminded that the future we dream of - one that is equal, safe, and empowering for all - begins with the lessons we teach our children today. ๐ŸŒโœจ
