The Province of Negros Occidental is blessed with abundant natural resources, both in agriculture and fisheries sector, ready to be tapped and fully utilized.

In partnership with the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI-R6), the Negros Occidental - Office of the Provincial Agriculturist invited a total of 30 rural and coastal women to have the opportunity to learn sustainable livelihood and enterprise development and harness their potentials in product development and marketing.

The 3-day training officially starts from August 12 until August 14, 2026 at Nature's Village Resort, Talisay City. This training aims to enhance the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of rural and coastal women on value-adding, food safety, effective marketing and business expansion in promoting viable and climate-resilient livelihood practices.

Participants will learn from expert resource persons coming from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), DTI Negosyo Center, OPA, and youth champion in the Young Farmers Challenge.

Furthermore, this practical coaching will empower the Negrense women to establish and grow sustainable enterprise, access funding and support from government agencies, and ultimately improve income and build resilient communities. *

UNITED, SCIENCEโ€‘DRIVEN RESPONSE: NEGROS OCCIDENTAL RISES TO OVERCOME RSSI CRISIS

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL โ€” Through steady leadership of Governor Eugenio โ€œBongโ€ Lacson and Provincial Administrator Atty. Rayfrando Diaz II, the province has declared a State of Calamity, unlocking emergency resources to mount a decisive, compassionate, and scienceโ€‘backed campaign against the Redโ€‘Striped Soft Scale Insect (RSSI) that has affected over 14,400 hectares of sugarcane.

Instead of quick fixes, the province chose a sustainable path: deploying Metarhizium, a natural biological fungus that targets the pest without harming the land or communities. Ground teams have already treated wide areas in Bago City, La Carlota City, and Murcia, with operations set to reach Ilog, Hinigaran, and Manapla next.

Executive Order No. 26โ€‘12 sets a unified standard for assessment, data gathering, and distribution โ€” ensuring every action is guided by facts, not politics.

A Provincial Biosecurity Task Force coordinates closely with the Sugar Regulatory Administration, Department of Agriculture, and barangay leaders to map infestations with precision, backed by drone technology and handsโ€‘on training for local teams. Financial support is also flowing: the DA is being tapped for โ‚ฑ10 million in operational funds, while DSWD has begun releasing direct aid to over 6,200 farmers and workers to help keep livelihoods stable.

โ€œEvery measure we take is rooted in care for our farmers, respect for our land, and faith in our collective strength,โ€ Governor Lacson emphasized.

โ€œThis challenge unites us โ€” not as separate towns, but as one Negrense family working together to protect our heritage and build back stronger.โ€
