In the food processing industry, efficiency is measured not only by how much a company produces, but by how well it adapts to changing demands, rising production costs, and the need for consistent product quality. For GH Foods, Incorporated (GHFI), innovation has become a necessary ingredient in sustaining growth.

Based in Brgy. Blumentritt, Murcia, Negros Occidental, GHFI has steadily transformed from a traditional agricultural enterprise into a modern food manufacturing company producing a diverse line of processed food products for the local and export market. Through the support of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) under the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) Innovation-Enabling Fund (iFund), the company continues to expand its operations under the project, โ€œProcess and System Improvement for Sweet Preserves Production.โ€

The companyโ€™s story began in 1975 as More Foods Inc., initially operating as a cucumber and vegetable plantation supplying export markets in Japan. As market opportunities evolved, the enterprise transitioned into RM Farmers and later PRISM Foods, gradually venturing into food processing through products such as pickled cucumbers and canned goods. In 1993, GH Foods, Incorporated was formally established, carrying forward decades of agricultural and processing experience into a more integrated farm-to-food operation.

Today, GHFI manufactures a broad portfolio of products under the GREEN HARVEST brand, including pickled cucumbers, nata de coco, sweet kaong, processed seafood, and meat products. Beyond manufacturing, the company maintains contract-growing arrangements with farmers in Negros Island and Mindanao for cucumbers and sweet palm fruit, creating a production chain that directly links agricultural communities to value-added food processing.

The company operates with a clear strategic direction anchored on delivering safe, high-quality, and affordable food products while striving to be a trusted provider of everyday Filipino food solutions. It upholds principles of quality, integrity, teamwork, and trust, while promoting continuous improvement, customer satisfaction, employee development, and sustainable business growth.
To support these goals, DOST provided technological interventions through a 3-phase SETUP iFund assistance program designed to address critical production bottlenecks and improve manufacturing productivity.

The first phase, approved in July 2012 and implemented in December 2012, involved the acquisition of a biomass-fired steam boiler to replace the companyโ€™s dependence on bunker fuel. This intervention improved production reliability and reduced energy costs.
The second phase, approved in June 2019 and implemented in December 2019, focused on upgrading the companyโ€™s production facility through the acquisition of an Automatic Filling Machine, resulting in enhanced packaging efficiency and product consistency for pouched products.
To further streamline bottling operations, the third phase of the project, approved in June 2025, is currently under implementation. The intervention focuses on process and system improvement for sweet preserves production, particularly for nata de coco, kaong, and pickled cucumber bottling lines. The project integrates three bottling units into a high-efficiency filling and capping assembly line designed to optimize product flow, reduce manual intervention, and improve overall plant productivity.

The installation of a 50-hp biomass-fired steam boiler likewise introduced an integrated automation system for fuel feeding, feedwater supply, and ash discharge. This upgrade improved combustion efficiency and operational control which reduces rice hull consumption from 130 bags to 70 bags per production cycle, thereby enhancing overall energy efficiency and sustainability. The boiler system produces approximately 800 kilograms of steam per hour at 150 psig (10 Kg/cmยฒ), which provides a stable thermal energy essential in food processing operations such as cooking, sterilization, and bottling.

Complementing these equipment upgrades, GHFI also received technical consultancy services under the DOST Manufacturing Productivity Extension (MPEX) Program and food safety consultancy initiatives. These interventions supported the company in improving production systems, operational standards, and process management practices aligned with industry requirements.

The impact of these technology interventions has been measurable. Within one year of implementation, GHFI recorded a 34 % increase in production volume and a 3% growth in sales. Employment likewise expanded from 45 workers in 2011 to 70 personnel at present, reflecting increased production capacity and the companyโ€™s continued contribution to local livelihood generation.

More importantly, the technological initiatives enabled GHFI to strengthen its competitiveness in the food processing sector while adopting more energy-efficient and sustainable manufacturing systems. From farm sourcing to automated bottling operations, the companyโ€™s transition demonstrates how science, technology, and innovation can help local enterprises scale operations while maintaining product quality and operational sustainability.

The continued support extended to GH Foods emphasizes DOSTโ€™s commitment to enabling micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to adopt appropriate technologies, improve productivity, and strengthen their role in regional economic development and food manufacturing competitiveness.

The Department of Science and Technology through the Negros Occidental Provincial Science and Technology Office, is proud to support the First Pottersโ€™ Convention of Brgy. Pahanocoy held on April 29, 2026 This milestone event brought together potters, artisans, community leaders, partners and government agencies to celebrate the rich legacy of terracotta pottery while charting a sustainable path forward through science, technology and innovation.

This culmination is a highlight of DOST's support to the Local Government Unit of Barangay. Pahanocoy through the Grants-in-Aid (GIA) program entitled โ€œUpgrading the Terracotta Pottery Industry in Barangay Pahanocoy, Bacolod Cityโ€. This initiative aims to modernize the industry and solve environmental issues like smoke and air pollution that have affected the community for decades. DOST provided funding of Php 2,972,916.00 and technical expertise to replace open-firing with a 2-cubic meter gas-fired shuttle-type kiln. This facility, which includes a 180-square meter production and learning hub, ensures maximum efficiency and compliance with modern standards.

DOST's role extends to capacity building through the creation of a Terracota Pottery Making Handbook, developed with assistance of the University of St. La Salle (USLS) BS Computer Science students. Furthermore, various livelihood training programs were conducted to empower the Katilingban sang Maninihon sa Pahanocoy (KAMIPA), the beneficiary of the said project. These trainings were made possible through the collaborative efforts of the USLS Accountancy Department, USLS Balayan, and Jamp-R Kilns & Dryer Enterprises, ensuring the community is equipped with both the technical skills and the business acumen necessary for sustainable growth.

Through themed educational forums, participants of the convention discussed environmental, technological, and livelihood issues, emphasizing collaboration for the craftโ€™s future. DOST Negros Occidental, represented by Engr. Fedi Marie C. Lima, emphasized the synergy of science, technology, and communities and government is the key to sustaining our local industries. Furthermore, future plans of this recently concluded project were discussed, which includes the continued consultancy and assistance for terracotta and ceramic pottery and creative design to KAMIPA.

A vibrant pop-up exhibit also showcased the diverse products crafted by the artisans of KAMIPA. These terracotta products, which range from traditional cooking stoves and decorative pots to specialized clay crafts, represent the decades of ancestral practice now being enhanced through modern innovation. This exhibit allowed participants to witness firsthand the quality and cultural significance of the industry being revitalized by the GIA project.

The convention also featured a ceremonial turnover of seed funds from the Barangay Pahanocoy Council to KAMIPA. This signifies the local government's determination and commitment to empower the pottery artisans and strengthen their livelihood activities and the culture of pottery.

Smart Energy and Better Systems at Work in a Local Dressing Plant

Chickenoro Inc., a dressed chicken manufacturer in Brgy. Talotog, Murcia, has officially modernized its operations to improve efficiency and reduce overhead costs. By partnering with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Negros Occidental Provincial Science and Technology Office, the company is utilizing high-impact technologies to solve two common industrial challenges: rising electricity prices and delivery tracking gaps.

Under the SETUP 4.0 Innovation-Enabling Fund (iFund), the plant integrated a grid-tied solar photovoltaic system to power its energy-intensive poultry processing. Because food safety standards require equipment like screw chillers, steam boilers, and industrial ice makers to operate continuously, energy consumption often spikes during peak production. The new solar setup supplements the power supply and includes mobile monitoring, allowing the operations team to track energy generation and real-time savings. Under the net-metering program, any excess power produced is exported back to the grid.

Simultaneously, the company has been enhancing its delivery processes. Like many expanding businesses, it encounters challenges related to fuel management, route discrepancies, and a lack of visibility in delivery operations. To solve this challenge, a mobile digital recording system equipped with GPS and fuel monitoring has been implemented. This system delivers real-time insights into the routes taken, driving habits, idle periods, and fuel usage. With access to this information, management can closely oversee trips, pinpoint irregularities, and refine planning for upcoming deliveries.

Chickenoroโ€™s partnership with DOST spans more than a decade. Earlier support in 2010 and 2017 enhanced its processing operations through semi-automation. This upgrade helped the company maintain its certification from the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) and achieve a processing capacity of approximately 1,500 to 2,500 birds per hour.

For Chickenoro, this long-standing partnership has been a key driver of its growth:

โ€œSince our partnership with DOST in 2010, SETUP has been a catalyst for our transformation. Being a three-time beneficiary of this program has enabled us to navigate the complexities of the poultry industry with greater precision and confidence. As we move forward into the SETUP 4.0 era, Chickenoro remains committed to integrating smarter technologies to better serve our customers. We thank DOST for believing in our potential and for being our partner in โ€˜Science for the People.โ€™ Together, we are demonstrating that through science and technology, Filipino enterprises can compete at the highest level.โ€

The support provided to Chickenoro reflects the goal of SETUP 4.0 to help enterprises adopt technologies that improve efficiency and strengthen operations. From upgrading its processing line to adopting renewable energy and digital systems, the company continues to evolve through science, technology, and innovation.

Today, Chickenoro is running smarter by using solar energy to power its facility and digital systems to monitor deliveries in real-time. These improvements translate into better cost control, increased efficiency, and more reliable operations.
