A landslide struck Boliney Central School this afternoon, August 7, 2026, following continuous rains that left the soil heavily saturated.

The landslide caused a portion of the school grounds to collapse, including an upper section that previously served as a pathway.

Fortunately, classes at all levels across the Province of Abra had been suspended for the day, keeping students away from the area when the landslide occurred.

The incident underscores the importance of precautionary measures amid prolonged rains, where putting safety first can prevent tragedy and save lives.

The Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) is expected to bring persistent and increasingly heavy rains over Abra and neighboring provinces in the coming days, according to PAGASA Weather Advisory No. 24 issued at 5:00 PM today, August 7.

Abra Rainfall Outlook
โ€ข Until Saturday afternoon, Aug. 8: 50โ€“100 mm
โ€ข Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon, Aug. 9: 100โ€“200 mm
โ€ข Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon, Aug. 10: 100โ€“200 mm

Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Benguet are likewise forecast to receive 100โ€“200 mm of rainfall from Saturday afternoon through Monday afternoon.

Rainfall may be higher over mountainous and elevated areas, while already saturated ground from previous rains may increase the risk of flooding and rain-induced landslides.

Abreรฑos, especially those in flood- and landslide-prone communities, are urged to remain vigilant and closely monitor Heavy Rainfall Warnings and other official advisories from DOST-PAGASA and local authorities.

Stay alert. Avoid unnecessary travel in hazardous areas, and prioritize safety.

In response to public demand, the Provincial Government of Abra, under the leadership of Governor Eustaquio Bersamin and through the initiative of the Office of Vice Governor Anne A. Bersamin, in partnership with the Department of Transportationโ€“Cordillera Administrative Region (DOTr-CAR), successfully conducted the second batch of the free two-day Theoretical Driving Course (TDC) on August 5 and 7, 2026.

Around 150 Abreรฑos participated in the training, where Regional Drivers Education Center resource speakers Ramon Bocalan Jr., Cecilio Gallardo, and Andy Wilang discussed traffic laws, defensive driving, road safety, and responsible road behavior.

On behalf of Governor Bersamin and Vice Governor Bersamin, Provincial Information Officer Atty. King Blas Jervin C. Pagtailan emphasized that driving is not merely a privilege or a means of mobility, but a responsibility that demands discipline, awareness, and respect for the lives of others on the road.

More than a requirement for obtaining a driverโ€™s license, the program equips aspiring motorists with the knowledge and discipline to become responsible road users; helping build safer roads and safer communities for every Abreรฑo.

The Provincial Government of Abra reminds everyone that the safety of our learners remains our foremost concern.

Some students in our province must traverse the Abra River and other waterways just to reach their schools. With rivers currently swelling due to continuous rains, we cannot put their lives at unnecessary risk.

We ask for everyoneโ€™s understanding and compassion. Decisions concerning class suspensions are made with careful consideration of conditions across the entire province, especially in communities facing greater risks.

Let us be more compassionate and mindful of the realities our learners face. No school day is worth risking a life.

Tropical Depression is now over the Philippine Sea and continues to weaken while moving east-southeastward at 35 km/h, according to DOST-PAGASAโ€™s 5:00 PM bulletin today, August 6.

As of 4:00 PM, the center of Maymay was located 150 km east-northeast of Echague, Isabela, with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h and gusts of up to 70 km/h.

Abra is no longer under any Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal. TCWS No. 1 remains in effect over portions of Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Aurora, Kalinga, Mountain Province, and Ifugao.

Despite Maymay moving away, the Southwest Monsoon and its outer circulation may still bring strong gusts and heavy rains. Residents of Abra and neighboring provinces are advised to remain vigilant, particularly in areas prone to flooding and landslides.
