The Bangsamoro Women Commission (BWC) successfully conducted a Listening Session and MHPSS activity for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Lamitan City. The activity was spearheaded by Commissioner Faija T. Taalil together with the BWC staff, in collaboration with the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO).
The program formally commenced with a welcome message from Jail Chief Inspector Roy M. Samaunang, who emphasized the importance of the activity as part of the welfare programs for PDLs. Commissioner Faija T. Taalil, in her message of support, highlighted the purpose of the visit — to personally check on the welfare and well-being of the PDLs, encourage openness, and remind them that genuine remorse and willingness to change are steps toward a better future.
The session was facilitated by Ms. Aisha Miguel Asarul, RN, MHPSS Coordinator of IPHO, who discussed the concepts of mental health, signs of stress and depression, and healthy coping mechanisms. One of the highlights was the Listening Session, where participants shared personal struggles, emotions, and hopes, while fellow inmates responded with empathy and compassion.
The activity created a safe space for healing, strengthened bonds among PDLs, and reminded them that despite their circumstances, they remain valued, heard, and worthy of care and support.
