Viral Posts Misrepresent Old & Out-of-Town Incidents; CDO Police Launch Probe, Pursue Legal Action Against Misleading Page

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Authorities from the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) have issued a strong clarification and warning regarding multiple misleading posts circulated by the social media page “Bisaya ta vines”, which continue to misrepresent facts, share old footage, and pass off incidents from other locations as if they occurred here — unfairly tarnishing the city’s reputation and peace and order standing.

Investigation disclosed that the page has repeatedly uploaded videos captioned to suggest that brawls, riots, and disorder are common or recent occurrences in Cagayan de Oro. Two of the most viral posts in question include:

1. Video of physical altercation along a road: Presented as recent, but verified to be footage of an incident recorded April 5, 2026 at Cabula Bridge, Barangay Lumbia. Records from Police Station 8 (Lumbia) confirm this was already responded to, documented, and resolved by police on the very same day. Prompt intervention prevented escalation, restored order, and the matter was settled at the barangay level — no outstanding issues remain.
2. Video near a convenience store, captioned “Ingon ani ang mga batan ON dre sa CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY”: This clip was taken from another source and did not happen in Cagayan de Oro City at all, as pointed out by observant netizens in the comments. It was also confirmed to be an old video dating back to 2025, yet reposted with captions that falsely link it to the city.

In both cases, the page deliberately removed original context, reposted without permission, and used captions to mislead viewers into believing these were current or local problems. This irresponsible practice has caused unnecessary alarm, misinformed the public, and unjustly portrayed the “City of Golden Friendship” as unsafe or disorderly.

PCOL DEXTER G PAJE, City Director of COCPO, has directed the City Investigation and Detective Management Unit (CIDMU) to conduct a comprehensive case build-up and file appropriate legal actions against the page owner/administrator. This includes violations under the Cybercrime Prevention Act, laws against false information, and any applicable provisions relating to defamation and misleading public communication — as this is not an isolated incident but a pattern of repeatedly posting misleading content.

Authorities emphasized:

“Sharing old videos or incidents from other places and claiming they happened here is not only dishonest — it creates fear, damages our city’s image, and undermines the hard work of our police force and community to maintain peace. We will not tolerate attempts to mislead the public or drag Cagayan de Oro’s name through misinformation.”

COCPO assures the public that peace and order in the city remain stable and well-managed, with 24/7 police visibility, regular patrols, and rapid response teams deployed across all barangays.

The public is strongly urged to:
✅ Verify information only from official police announcements and accredited news outlets.
✅ Refrain from sharing unvetted, out-of-context, or clearly misleading posts.
✅ Report pages or accounts that deliberately spread false or distorted news.

For concerns, clarifications, or to report similar misleading content, the public may call the COCPO Hotline: 0917 771 3663 or send a direct message to the official social media pages of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office.

We remain committed to transparency, safety, and protecting the truth about our city.
