Senior High School students got a crash course in political literacy on July 31, 2026 as the Local Youth Development Office (LYDO) rolled out Political Awareness Program, a forum designed to sharpen young voters' critical thinking ahead of future elections and beyond.

The program, held at Carigara National Vocational School (CNVS), drew on the theme "PoliTHINKs: Igniting Political Awareness Among the Youth, Reshaping the Greater Future of the Nation."

Politics beyond the ballots, common political myths, the anatomy of political crises, and the role of youth activism are the center of these four discussion tracks.

Three political scientists led the sessions: Ryan Dauplo, Sigmund Fletcher Tarrayo, and John Lester Reamillo of the Leyte Normal University and University of the Philippines Tacloban.

Organizers said the goal was to move students beyond passive civic knowledge toward active, informed participation, from questioning misinformation to understanding how institutional breakdowns affect governance.

The event drew backing from local officials, including Mayor Eduardo T. Ong Jr., Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President Daniel N. Ariaso Jr., and Miss Carigara Legacy.

The idea for PoliTHINKs took shape in June 2025, pitched by LYDC Secretary Kent Deloria Reyes. LYDO Officer Ronnie Onrejas oversaw its ex*****on alongside the youth council: Francis May Ortula, president pro tempore; Reya Vil Grisola, vice president; Reyes, secretary; Aiyazen Go Legaspi, treasurer; Montealegre, auditor; Ronnel John Carolino, public information officer; and Jailei Kurtz Brazil, Teen Center Coordinator.

With the pilot run behind them, organizers say they plan to expand the program to additional schools across Carigara as part of a broader push to build a more civically engaged youth base.
