𝗗𝗿. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗹 𝗧. 𝗩𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗣𝗟𝗕-𝗜𝗡𝗥𝗘𝗠

The University of the Philippines Los Baños–Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management (UPLB-INREM) welcomes Dr. Maricel A. Tapia-Villamayor as its new Director.

A faculty member of the UPLB College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR), Dr. Villamayor officially assumed office on 1 April 2026, succeeding Academician Juan M. Pulhin, UPLB-INREM's founding director. Before her appointment, Dr. Canesio D. Predo served as Officer-in-Charge, ensuring the continuity of the Center's programs and partnerships during the leadership transition.

An expert in environmental governance, climate change adaptation, and natural resource management, Dr. Villamayor envisions UPLB-INREM as a catalyst for transforming knowledge into action through interdisciplinary collaboration and strong stakeholder partnerships.

"My vision is simple—to co-create and translate knowledge into innovative solutions and resilient practices for people and planet. Grounded in ridge-to-reef thinking, science-based decision-making, and genuine stakeholder empowerment, UPLB-INREM under my helm will build on the legacy of my predecessor through interdisciplinary collaboration that brings the right people together," she shared.

As the Center continues to address pressing environmental and development challenges, Dr. Villamayor emphasized the importance of collective action:

"From knowledge to solutions—together, for people and planet. For God's glory."

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗨𝗣𝗟𝗕-𝗜𝗡𝗥𝗘𝗠 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀

Led by newly appointed Director Dr. Maricel T. Villamayor, the UPLB-INREM conducted courtesy visits to the UP Resilience Institute (UPRI) and Forest Foundation Philippines (FFP) on 1 June 2026 to reaffirm institutional partnerships and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

Joining Dr. Villamayor were Academician Juan M. Pulhin, former UPLB-INREM Director, and members of the Center’s staff. The meetings provided an opportunity to introduce the new leadership, revisit past collaborations, and discuss new areas of cooperation in resilience, sustainability, environmental conservation, knowledge sharing, and capacity building.

As UPLB-INREM begins a new chapter, the Center remains committed to building strong partnerships that advance interdisciplinary research, innovation, and sustainable development for people and the environment.

𝐒𝐚𝐣𝐢𝐬𝐞, PhD, of the Department of Economics, College of Economics and Management, and a valued member of the UPLB-INREM Technical Working Group, for being recognized as a 𝐔𝐏 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐈𝐈 under the 𝐔𝐏 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 (𝐂𝐘 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒–𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔).

At UPLB-INREM, Prof. Sajise serves as 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭, where he plays a key role in advancing work on ecosystem service valuation, natural capital accounting, and payment for ecosystem services. His research continues to inform evidence-based policies, support sustainable development, and generate meaningful impact for both people and the environment.

Mayor Alfred or JR as he is fondly called, transformed the Municipality of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte as a town that was onced recognized as “barrio” for its backward development to a cover of various transformative leadership online stories and magazines.

The program was recognized as one of the best practices by the Galing Pook Awards Foundation and became a model for community-led conservation in the Philippines and in the World. LGU Del Carmen received local and international awards such Masagana at Malinis na Karagatan (MMK) from BFAR, Best Mangrove Awards from the Zoological Society of London, INREM from the University of the Philippines, among others. The highlight of the transformation was for the Del Carmen Mangrove Forest Reserve being recognized by the DENR as a Wetland of International Importance under the UN Ramsar Convention.

Mayor Coro recognized the importance of a robust health governance system, especially in a geographically isolated and disadvantaged area like the Municipality of Del Carmen. Under his leadership, the municipality improved access to primary health care services by upgrading local
health facilities, enhancing medical supplies, and expanding the services of rural health units. These social innovations for
public health was recognized by WHO, SIHI, ZFF and DOH with the Social Innovation for Health Award and Health Leadership
Awards.
