Through prompt, proactive, and people-centered collaboration, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO-LGU) strengthened environmental management efforts at the Tent City Evacuation Center in Barangay Nuing, Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, serving families affected by the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake.

With over 1,000 evacuees, concerns were raised regarding the increasing volume of plastic waste in the area. In response, the team, headed by Ms. Madelyn C. Birondo, conducted an orientation on proper solid waste segregation in accordance with Republic Act No. 9003, otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

Sacks and black bags were provided for the segregation of plastic waste, while biodegradable waste was directed to the barangayโ€™s designated composting area. Recyclable materials will be stored at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for proper turnover and collection by MENRO.

This initiative highlights the importance of proper waste management even in emergency situations, helping maintain a clean, safe, and orderly evacuation environment for all affected families.

By observing these successfully implemented systems, the team is now better equipped to adopt innovative and eco-friendly solutions at the Provincial Capitol Compound.

In partnership with DOST, the Province continues to advance water management through science, technology, and nature-based innovations.

The Office successfully conducted a series of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities on March 28-29, 2026, covering coastal and inland communities to strengthen awareness and understanding of Batas Pambansa Blg. 265.

On March 28, 2026, IEC sessions were conducted during the assemblies of Barangays South Lamidan and Linadasan, both belonging to coastal communities. The discussions primarily focused on the provisions of Batas Pambansa Blg. 265, emphasizing its relevance to coastal resource management and environmental protection.

The activity was led by Ms. Roxan A. Susalo, with the assistance of IEC Support Staff Jenifer A. Inocillas and monitoring personnel Donald P. Manangca, Joel L. Diacosta, and Gilbes B. Pamulagan Jr.

Meanwhile, on March 29, 2026, the team conducted an IEC session during Barangay Kinanga's assembly. Given that the team had previously attended the assembly during the last semester of 2025, the discussion focused on a more detailed and in-depth explanation of Batas Pambansa Blg. 265, further reinforcing the community's understanding and compliance.

These initiatives reflect the Office's continued commitment to promoting environmental awareness and ensuring that communities are well-informed partners in sustainable development.

Together, let us work towards a more informed and environmentally responsible community!
