Through prompt, proactive, and people-centered collaboration, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO-LGU) strengthened environmental management efforts at the Tent City Evacuation Center in Barangay Nuing, Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, serving families affected by the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake.
With over 1,000 evacuees, concerns were raised regarding the increasing volume of plastic waste in the area. In response, the team, headed by Ms. Madelyn C. Birondo, conducted an orientation on proper solid waste segregation in accordance with Republic Act No. 9003, otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Sacks and black bags were provided for the segregation of plastic waste, while biodegradable waste was directed to the barangayโs designated composting area. Recyclable materials will be stored at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for proper turnover and collection by MENRO.
This initiative highlights the importance of proper waste management even in emergency situations, helping maintain a clean, safe, and orderly evacuation environment for all affected families.
