Pinangunahan ni Cong. Atty.
Sincere thanks as well to Rep. Milagros Aquino-Magsaysay for the thoughtful birthday greetings and cake surprise during the committee hearing.
The Committee on Senior Citizens conducted its Regular Meeting today, May 6, 2026, at the Women Legislatorsโ Lounge, House of Representatives, to deliberate on several proposed measures aimed at strengthening the rights, welfare, and participation of Filipino senior citizens in nation-building.
Among the key measures discussed was the proposed expansion of employment opportunities for senior citizens and the granting of additional incentives to private entities employing elderly workers. The proposal seeks to further amend Republic Act No. 7432, as amended by RA 9257 and RA 9994, to maximize the valuable contributions of senior citizens to society.
The Committee also considered and approved the Substitute Bill to HB's 436, 515, 4457, 6324, 6412 and 6554 seeking to protect senior citizens from various forms of fraud through stronger information dissemination and institutional support mechanisms. The measure aims to address the growing concern over scams and financial exploitation targeting elderly Filipinos.
During the meeting, lawmakers also initiated deliberations on several bills (HB 191, 782, 2606, 4649 and 6223) proposing mandatory budget allocations for senior citizen programs in both national government agencies and local government units. The proposed measures seek to ensure sustainable funding for programs, services, and activities dedicated to the welfare and empowerment of senior citizens nationwide.
HR 1678 & 189 - Another significant topic discussed was the creation of the โSangguniang Nakakatandaโ or senior citizensโ sectoral representation at the community level. The proposed measures aim to provide senior citizens with a stronger voice in governance and policymaking while promoting active participation in community development and nation-building.
HR 340 - The Committee likewise tackled House Resolution No. 340, expressing support for an international human rights treaty for older persons initiated through the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWGA).
The meeting reaffirmed the Committeeโs commitment to advancing policies that uphold the dignity, protection, and meaningful participation of senior citizens in Philippine society.
