𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃: Official Statement of the Bangsamoro Youth Commission regarding the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Shooting incident.

The Bangsamoro Youth Commission (BYC) strongly and unequivocally condemns the reported shooting incident at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University this morning, August 18, 2026, involving a high school student as the suspect.

We express our deepest concern and sympathy to the students, faculty, staff, families, and the entire Ateneo de Zamboanga University community affected by this tragic and senseless act of violence.

Schools must remain safe spaces where young people can learn, grow, and pursue their dreams without fear. This heinous act of violence must not be tolerated or normalized under any circumstances.

The BYC urges the authorities to immediately conduct a swift, thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the incident and ensure accountability in accordance with due process and the law, and take all necessary measures to protect students and prevent similar incidents from happening again.

We also call on educational institutions and concerned agencies to reinforce security protocols, establish effective early-intervention systems, and ensure that students have access to appropriate psychosocial and mental health support.

We likewise appeal to parents, educators, youth leaders, and communities to work together in creating environments where young people feel safe to speak about their struggles, conflicts, and concerns.

The Bangsamoro Youth Commission stands in solidarity with the Ateneo de Zamboanga University community during this difficult time. We call on everyone to reject violence, uphold the sanctity of life, and work together toward safer and more peaceful learning environments for all young people.
