โ€ŽStrengthening digital resilience among student leaders remains a key priority as academic communities continue to navigate an increasingly technology-driven landscape. In line with this, a Cyber Hygiene Training under the APAC Cybersecurity Fund equipped youth leaders with essential knowledge and practices to safeguard their online presence and data.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽSupported by The Asia Foundation and implemented by YGOAL Inc., the training was conducted on January 23, 2026, in partnership with the USM- University Student Government as part of a broader effort to promote cybersecurity awareness and responsible digital engagement. The program focused on key areas such as identifying cyber threats, strengthening personal data protection, and adopting preventive strategies against online risks.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽAmong those who completed the training were CASS-LSG officers, together with Board Member Mario Jr. Capunggan, CPAI Chairperson Florence Bea Bangoy, and CPAI Vice Chairperson Angel Valderama.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽTheir participation reflects a growing recognition of the role student leaders play in modeling responsible online behavior and fostering safer digital spaces within their respective institutions.

In celebration of the 8th Hadja Bai Fatima Matabay Namli Plang Day, with the theme โ€œCelebrating the Founderโ€™s Roots and Legacy,โ€ the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) held a Literary and Folk Singing Competition on April 13, 2026, at the University Auditorium in Kabacan, Cotabato.

The annual observance, declared through Provincial Ordinance No. 624 in March 2019, honors USMโ€™s very own Bai Matabay Plang for her legacy as a strong advocate of education and her undeniable contributions to the academic and social development of Mindanao. The celebration serves as a reminder of her vision and dedication to empowering learners and strengthening the university community.

As part of the celebration, students from various colleges showcased their talents in different competition categories. From the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), Alexene Naelgas, a first-year BA Political Science student, was hailed champion in the Essay Writing Competition with her winning piece titled โ€œPower, Politics, and a Princessโ€™s Persistence: A Womanโ€™s War from Within.โ€ In the Spoken Word Poetry category, Lloyd Ivan Cantomayor, also a BA Political Science student, secured the championship with his powerful and expressive performance entitled โ€œByaheng Kolehiyo.โ€ Meanwhile, in the Folk Song Singing Competition, Trisha Redilla, a first-year BA Psychology student, earned first place, proudly representing the CASS community with confidence and skill.

The event not only highlighted the creativity and talent of first-year students across different programs but also deepened their awareness and appreciation of the universityโ€™s history and founding legacy. Through literature, spoken word, and music, participants were able to express their interpretations of identity, culture, and gratitude toward the institutionโ€™s roots.

The celebration strengthened the sense of unity among students and emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring the legacy of Bai Matabay Plang as an inspiration for future generations of USMians.

The rising digital risks among youth prompted the College of Arts and Social Sciences โ€“ Local Student Government (CASS-LSG) to conduct โ€œCASSayuran: A Safe Space for Smart Choiceโ€ at Matalam High School on March 27, 2026.

Held in partnership with Balaod Mindanaw, the outreach gathered high school students in an interactive setting aimed at raising awareness and equipping students with essential knowledge on cybersecurity and responsible online behavior. The initiative forms part of CASS-LSGโ€™s extension efforts to promote inclusive education and community engagement.

A key highlight was the cybersecurity discussion led by Liam Aiken Osorio and Ruby Buntas, focusing on online safety and common threats such as cyberbullying, phishing, scams, and identity theft. Students were also guided on responsible digital behavior and verifying information before sharing online.

โ€œCASSayuranโ€ provided a safe space for dialogue, allowing participants to engage and share insights. The discussions helped students better understand how to protect themselves from digital risks and safeguard their online identity.

The initiative underscored the role of education in shaping informed and responsible youth, reflecting CASS-LSGโ€™s commitment to service and community development.
