WHEN HISTORY MEETS ATI-ATIHAN: KALIBOโ€™S DOUBLE CELEBRATION

On November 3, 2026, Kalibo will once again bring together two important occasions in its calendar: the 455th Kalibo Foundation Day and the Opening Salvo of the 2027 Kalibo Seรฑor Santo Niรฑo Ati-Atihan Festival.

Thank you, Ro Akeanon.

Mayor Juris B. Sucro has formally announced that the Opening Salvo for the 2027 festival will be held on November 3, alongside Kalibo Foundation Day. The decision was unanimously endorsed by the concerned committee and supported by Sangguniang Bayan Member Rex A. Bautista.

An Executive Order has likewise been issued to establish the working committees that will provide operational support to the Kalibo Ati-Atihan Festival Board (KAFEB), the body mandated under Municipal Ordinance No. 2022-0003 to organize and manage the festival.

The 2027 Kalibo Seรฑor Santo Niรฑo Ati-Atihan Festival is scheduled for January 7โ€“17, 2027.

THE FOUNDATION DAY OF KALIBO

The November 3 Foundation Day is itself the product of historical research and a deliberate effort by Kalibo to understand and formally recognize its beginnings.

Prior to 2005, Kaliboโ€™s municipal seal and commonly accepted historical references had identified 1581 as the townโ€™s founding year. This was subsequently challenged by historical research commissioned by the Kalibo Council for Culture and the Arts.

Research undertaken by Dr. John E. Barrios and Emmanuel Lerona in the study Calivo: The Founding of a Town, identified November 3, 1571 as a significant date in the establishment of Kaliboโ€™s Spanish colonial administration under the encomienda system. The Municipality of Kalibo adopted this historical finding through Municipal Ordinance No. 2005-049, enacted on October 6, 2005, declaring November 3, 1571 as the Foundation Day of Kalibo and instituting the annual celebration of Kalibo Day every November 3.

The first Foundation Day was consequently celebrated on November 3, 2005, making the observance an important part of Kaliboโ€™s modern historical consciousness. Contemporary accounts described the celebration as an opportunity to look into Kaliboโ€™s origins, identity and heritage.

The date subsequently gained national recognition. Republic Act No. 12102, signed on December 13, 2024, declared November 3 every year as a Special Working Holiday in the Municipality of Kalibo, Aklan, to be known as Kalibo Foundation Day.

Thus, the 2026 observance represents the 455th Kalibo Foundation Day, based on the 1571 founding date adopted by the municipality.

BUT THE ATI-ATIHAN OPENING SALVO HAS ITS OWN HISTORY

The history of the Opening Salvo is equally interesting.

Historically, the Ati-Atihan Opening Salvo was scheduled at the beginning of the week leading to the third Sunday of January. This reflected the traditional structure of the festival when the major celebration was essentially a one-week event, culminating on the third Sunday of January.

In other words, the Opening Salvo was originally much closer to the main festival itself.

By the early 2010s, however, the organizers began moving the Opening Salvo much earlier in the calendar.

For the 2013 Kalibo Seรฑor Santo Niรฑo Ati-Atihan Festival, the Opening Salvo was held in October 2012. Contemporary reporting records that the 2013 Opening Salvo took place in late October, including street dancing on October 28 and related activities on October 29. The event was organized under the Kalibo Santo Niรฑo Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (KASAFI).

This marked an important transformation in the festival calendar.

The Opening Salvo was no longer simply the beginning of the immediate festival week. It became an early launching point for the following Januaryโ€™s Ati-Atihan, allowing organizers to begin generating public excitement and preparing participating groups months ahead of the main celebration.

Contemporary reporting also confirms that from 2012 to 2018, under the Kalibo Santo Niรฑo Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc., the Opening Salvoโ€”then referred to as โ€œSadsad Tamboeโ€โ€”was moved from its traditional January schedule to October.

WHEN THE OPENING SALVO MET KALIBO DAY

The calendar underwent another interesting evolution.

In 2019 and 2021, the Opening Salvo was held on November 3, deliberately putting it back-to-back with the celebration of Kalibo Day/Foundation Day.

The 2019 arrangement is independently documented in contemporary reports. SunStar reported that the November Opening Salvo was the official start of the annual Ati-Atihan activities and that it would also be celebrated as part of Kaliboโ€™s founding-day anniversary.

Bombo Radyo likewise reported the November 3, 2019 festivities surrounding the Opening Salvo of the 2020 Ati-Atihan Festival.

This historical sequence is significant:

Traditional January Opening Salvo
โ†“
October Opening Salvo beginning in 2012
โ†“
November 3 Opening Salvo linked with Kalibo Day in 2019 and 2021
โ†“
November 3, 2026 Opening Salvo for Ati-Atihan 2027

The 2026 announcement therefore represents not the creation of an entirely new concept, but a return to a previously used calendar arrangement.

FROM FOUNDATION DAY TO ATI-ATIHAN

There is a natural cultural logic in bringing the two celebrations together.

Foundation Day remembers where Kalibo came from.

Ati-Atihan celebrates what Kalibo continues to be.

One is centered on historical memory; the other is a living expression of faith, tradition, music, dance, devotion and community.

Together, they create a powerful progression:

HISTORY โ†’ HERITAGE โ†’ CELEBRATION

Foundation Day gives Kalibonhons an opportunity to look backwardโ€”to the historical development of their town.

The Ati-Atihan Opening Salvo then turns the communityโ€™s attention toward the futureโ€”to the next chapter of one of the Philippinesโ€™ most recognizable cultural festivals.

A LONGER COUNTDOWN TO 2027

The November Opening Salvo also has a practical purpose.

With the 2027 festival scheduled for January 7โ€“17, launching the festivities in November provides organizers, participating tribes, government agencies, businesses and the community with a longer preparation period.

It allows the festival machinery to begin operating months before the main January celebrations, including preparations for contingents, cultural presentations, security, traffic management, tourism programs, logistics and other operational requirements.

This is particularly relevant under the present institutional structure of KAFEB, which provides a more organized framework for managing the Ati-Atihan Festival.

NOT THE FIRST TIME

For this reason, the November 3, 2026 event should not be presented as the first time that Kalibo has combined its Foundation Day with the Ati-Atihan Opening Salvo.

It has happened before.

The documented 2019 Opening Salvo, for example, was explicitly connected with Kaliboโ€™s founding-day anniversary.

The 2021 observance likewise forms part of this history of November 3 Opening Salvos.

What makes 2026 significant is that the arrangement is being brought back once againโ€”and this time as the launching point for the 2027 Ati-Atihan Festival, while Kalibo marks its 455th Foundation Day.

TWO MILESTONES. ONE KALIBO.

There is perhaps no better way to understand the significance of November 3.

455 years of history.

One continuing cultural tradition.

One day connecting the two.

Foundation Day reminds Kalibo of its historical roots.

Ati-Atihan reminds Kalibo of the traditions that remain alive among its people.

And the Opening Salvo announces that another generation of Kalibonhons is ready to carry that tradition forward.

On November 3, 2026, history and Ati-Atihan will once again meet.
