READ | DepEd partners with IBP to provide legal aid for teachers nationwide

PASIG CITY, 28 October 2024 — The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) signed a Memorandum of Agreement on Monday to provide free legal aid to DepEd teachers and personnel across the country.

Witnessed by representatives from DepEd Teachers Union (DTU), Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT), and Teachers' Dignity Coalition (TDC) during the ceremonial signing, the partnership with IBP will give public school teachers and school-based non-teaching personnel access to legal advice and assistance in disputes and other legal concerns.

“We're happy to note na itong legal assistance memorandum that we're signing with the IBP, not only will benefit our teachers but also our school-based non-teaching personnel. So these includes administrative officers, accountants, clerks, and bookkeepers all over the Philippines. So that will benefit not only the 800,000 plus but the 100,000 plus non-teaching personnel,” Angara said.

Angara noted that the partnership with IBP marks another milestone in DepEd’s efforts to support the welfare of teachers —one of the directives of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr to the agency.

“Hindi hanggang puri lang ang binibigay natin sa ating teachers, kundi tunay na serbisyo, tunay na public service, at pag-appreciate sa kanilang binibigay sa ating mga mahal sa buhay,” Angara said, noting that public school teachers will benefit from the expanded career progression and medical allowance initiative of Pres. Marcos Jr.’s administration.

Angara also noted a personal connection, sharing that his father, former Senate President Edgardo Angara, served as IBP President in 1979.

IBP President Atty. Antonio C. Pido, Executive Vice President & Governor for Western Mindanao Atty. Allan G. Panolong, and other top officials of IBP welcomed the initiative, which they said aligns with IBP’s commitment to community service and supporting Filipino educators.

“Ngayon po sa term ni Secretary Angara, malaki po ang pag-asa ng mga g**o na hindi na magiging hand-to-mouth existence ang compensation ng mga public school teachers,” Atty. Pido said.

READ | DepEd and Japanese Firm's Partnership to Boost Public School Students’ Math Proficiency Nationwide

Pasig City, October 31, 2024 — In a major step to enhance math proficiency among public school students, the Department of Education (DepEd) has joined forces with Japan-based Sprix, Inc. to provide free access to the Test of Fundamental Skills (TOFAS) for learners nationwide. This partnership aims to support thousands of students in mastering essential math skills critical for their academic success.

The partnership was formalized with a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing ceremony held at the Bulwagan ng Karunungan in DepEd. Education Secretary Sonny Angara was joined by Hiroyuki Tsuneishi, President and Representative Director of Sprix Ltd.; Leo Shoji, Lead Development Officer of Sprix Ltd.’s Global Strategy Division; and Algrace Avancena, Chief Representative of Sprix Co. Ltd. – Philippines.

“Strengthening our students’ math skills is essential,” Secretary Angara emphasized. “With TOFAS, we have a targeted tool that identifies math proficiencies and areas for growth, and we are confident this will empower students across the country. Initial feedback from our regional directors has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re eager to expand its use to more learners.”

TOFAS allows teachers to assess students’ calculation and problem-solving skills accurately, providing valuable data to tailor instruction according to each student’s needs. By highlighting strengths and pinpointing areas needing improvement, TOFAS also fosters better communication among teachers, students, and parents, creating a support system that encourages motivation and academic progress.

Beyond academic benefits, TOFAS also promotes student well-being by offering teachers and parents clear insights into each learner’s mathematical journey, paving the way for enhanced engagement in mathematics and programming. "We’re thrilled to see TOFAS support students in the Philippines,” said Mr. Tsuneishi. “Our goal is to equip teachers with insights to better address the learning needs of every student.”

The initiative reflects DepEd’s commitment to elevating education quality across the Philippines, aligned with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision of equal opportunities and resources for all Filipino learners.
