Mendez, Cavite โ€” A Philippine pangolin (๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ด) found by a resident in Barangay Galicia 3, Mendez, Cavite, was safely turned over to the DENR Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) on September 3, 2026 for proper assessment and rehabilitation.

Based on his report, the concerned citizen discovered the pangolin roaming around his house on September 2, 2026. Recognizing the need for proper handling of the wildlife, he immediately sought assistance from the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Mendez.

Following coordination with the MENRO, the pangolin was endorsed for turnover to the DENR-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Cavite on September 3, 2026. The PENRO, in turn, promptly coordinated the matter with DENR CALABARZON for the appropriate arrangements and subsequent transfer of the wildlife to BMB.

Upon assessment by the BMB, the pangolin was found to require a specialized diet consisting of natural food items such as termites and ants. Its behavior, while under temporary human care, also indicated that it had not been domesticated or kept in captivity.

The BMBโ€™s Wildlife Resources Conservation Division subsequently coordinated with Cebu Pacific Air for the animalโ€™s transport to Palawan, where it is expected to undergo further care and rehabilitation, with its eventual return to its natural habitat subject to the appropriate assessment and disposition by wildlife authorities.

The safe handling and prompt turnover of the Philippine pangolin highlight the importance of immediate reporting and coordination when wildlife is encountered outside its natural habitat. The quick response of the Mendez MENRO, PENRO Cavite, DENR CALABARZON, and BMB helped ensure that the animal was placed under the care of the appropriate wildlife authorities.

The Philippine pangolin is endemic to Palawan and is considered one of the countryโ€™s most threatened wildlife species. Based on the DENR Administrative Order No. 2019-09 or the โ€œUpdated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna and Their Categories,โ€ Philippine pangolins are classified as Endangered (EN).

DENR CALABARZON reminds the public that individuals who encounter wildlife should avoid keeping, handling, or attempting to care for the animals on their own. Instead, they are encouraged to immediately coordinate with the nearest DENR office or local environment and natural resources office for proper assistance.

TANAY, Rizal โ€“ DENR CALABARZONโ€™s commitment to protecting public lands and upholding the integrity of land disposition processes earned the Region two recognitions for its performance in land titling and reversion cases.

Assistant Secretary for Legal Affairs, Enforcement and Human Resources Atty. Norlito A. Eneran presented the awards to Regional Executive Director Henry A. Adornado, PhD, together with Legal Division Assistant Chief and Land Claims and Conflicts Section Chief Attorney III Eric G. Ta-aca, and Attorney II Maureen Kris Rodriguez.

The Region received a Plaque of Recognition for being the second most compliant Regional Office in the submission of reversion data for 2026, showing its strengthened support to the Anti-Illegal Land Titling Committee.

Batangas City โ€“ To enhance employees' knowledge and skills in assessing damage to coastal resources within Marine Protected Areas (MPA), particularly in relation to catastrophic events such as oil spills, ship groundings, and typhoon damage, as well as in the development of mitigation or restoration plans and guidelines for natural resource damage assessment, the DENR CALABARZON, through the Conservation and Development Division and DENR Batangas, in partnership with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Marine Environmental Protection Group - Southern Tagalog, convene a specialized 4-day workshop from September 1-4, 2026 titled, "๐—ก๐—œ๐—ฃ๐—”๐—ฆ ๐— ๐—ฃ๐—” ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฝ: ๐——๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—”๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜โŸ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฒโŸ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€."

Today, September 3, marks Day 3 of the workshop, focusing on hands-on fieldwork and practical emergency response simulations. The program started at 5:30 AM with site deployment for real-world Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (S**T) exercises overseen by PCG instructors. Afternoon sessions feature PCG lectures on the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan (NOSCOP) and Incident Command System (ICS), a practical scent-dispersion exercise demonstrating environmental impact behavior, WebGnome oil spill trajectory modeling, hazardous waste management protocols, and interactive tabletop spill response simulations.

This practical field training builds directly upon the foundational knowledge established during the first two days of the program. Day 1 introduced Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) mapping, rapid vs. comprehensive assessments, and typhoon damage evaluation. Day 2 transitioned into specialized marine protection technical lectures led by PCG experts, covering oil fate, toxicity, booming strategies, chemical dispersants, and S**T observation methodologies. Meanwhile, Region IV-A Cluster Mentors serve as central facilitators throughout the workshop, guiding participant teams across core exercises and institutional implementation frameworks.

The workshop will conclude tomorrow, September 4, with advanced modules on ship grounding assessmentsโ€”highlighting local incident case studies from Balayan and Tingloy, Batangas. Presentations will cover ecosystem service valuation, marine plastic pollution, decision tree matrix monitoring, and the drafting of standardized Rapid Damage Assessment reporting templates. This capacity-building milestone reinforces long-term ecological resilience across Southern Tagalog's coastal communities. #
